Hyperbolicity Analysis of Polydisperse Sedimentation Models via a Secular Equation for the Flux Jacobian

چکیده
Polydisperse suspensions consist of small particles which are dispersed in a viscous fluid, and which belong to a finite number N of species that differ in size or density. Spatially one-dimensional kinematic models for the sedimentation of such mixtures are given by systems of N non-linear first-order conservation laws for the vector Φ of the N local solids volume fractions of each species. The problem of hyperbolicity of this system is considered here for the models due to Masliyah, Lockett and Bassoon, Batchelor and Wen and Höfler and Schwarzer. In each of these models, the flux vector depends only on a small number m < N of independent scalar functions of Φ, so its Jacobian is a rank-m perturbation of a diagonal matrix. This allows to identify its eigenvalues as the zeros of a particular rational function R(λ), which in turn is the determinant of a certain m ×m matrix. The coefficients of R(λ) follow from a representation formula due to Anderson [Lin. Alg. Appl. 246:49–70, 1996]. It is demonstrated that the secular equation R(λ) = 0 can be employed to efficiently localize the eigenvalues of the flux Jacobian, and thereby to identify parameter regions of guaranteed hyperbolicity for each model. Moreover, it provides the characteristic information required by certain numerical schemes to solve the respective systems of conservation laws.

Strongly Degenerate Parabolic-Hyperbolic Systems Modeling Polydisperse Sedimentation with Compression
We show how existing models for the sedimentation of monodisperse flocculated suspensions and of polydisperse suspensions of rigid spheres differing in size can be combined to yield a new theory of the sedimentation processes of polydisperse suspensions forming compressible sediments (“sedimentation with compression” or “sedimentation-consolidation process”). For N solid particle species, this ...
متن کاملHyperbolicity of Grad’s extension of hydrodynamic models for ionospheric plasma. Part 1: The single species case
We present the fluid equations derived by Schunck following Grad’s approach to solve the Boltzmann equation for near maxwellian distribution functions. We study the hyperbolic part of these systems usually referred to as 5, 8, 10, 13 and 16-moment approximation. We show that the hyperbolicity of the systems involving the heat flux as an independent variable always requires a limitation on the h...
متن کاملStable and accurate hybrid finite volume methods based on pure convexity arguments for hyperbolic systems of conservation law
This exploratory work tries to present first results of a novel approach for the numerical approximation of solutions of hyperbolic systems of conservation laws. The objective is to define stable and “reasonably” accurate numerical schemes while being free from any upwind process and from any computation of derivatives or mean Jacobian matrices. That means that we only want to perform flux eval...
متن کاملBedload transport in shallow water models: why splitting (may) fail, how hyperbolicity (can) help
In this paper, we are concerned with models for sedimentation transport consisting of a shallow water system coupled with a so called Exner equation that described the evolution of the topography. We show that, for some model of the bedload transport rate including the well-known Meyer-Peter and Müller model, the system is hyperbolic and, thus, linearly stable, only under some constraint on the...
متن کاملHyperbolicity of Grad’s extension of hydrodynamic models for ionospheric plasma
We investigate the hyperbolicity of the 5, 8, 10, 13 and 16moment Grad systems for two species of particles under the quasineutrality hypothesis. The analysis is based on an asymptotic expansion with respect to the mass ratio. We show that the hyperbolicity of the systems which involve the heat flux as an independent variable requires a limitation on this heat flux.
