CLEMENTINE: New Directions and Perspectives for One-of-a-Kind Spacecraft Missions
نویسندگان
چکیده
CLEMENTINE represents a new paradigm in spacecraft systems by incorporating advanced, lightweight, non-spaceflight and nonheritage technologies as major and critical components of the payload, the spacecraft hardware, and the spacecraft software subsystems. The program's success in applying and transferring these low-cost and highly capable technologies to space applications was based on sound developmental practices that are applicable to other programs. This paper examines the management and engineering approaches used for CLEMENTINE, discusses the methodology to assess, use, and test these approaches, and provides conclusions on the strengths and weaknesses of the development approach. The paper provides an insight into the common elements of the development approach that may be applicable to other smallsatellite missions developed under the new genre of small, cost-capped, fast-paced, and focused missions.

The Surprising Lunar
The lunar maria, the dark, smooth areas on the Moon, formed when lava flowed across the surface billions of years ago. Samples returned from the Moon by astronauts and by automated spacecraft suggested that the maria consist mostly of basalts with either low (less than about 5 wt%) or high (more than about 9 wt%) contents of titanium dioxide (TiO2). Scientists wondered why there were so few lav...

GPS receivers nowadays provide a well established system for tracking of spacecraft in low-Earth orbit (LEO). In addition, GPS receivers serve as instruments for geodetic and atmospheric research on an ever growing number of science missions. The paper provides an overview of existing GPS receivers for LEO satellites, covering both fully space qualified as well as commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS...
متن کاملNew Insights into the Complex History of Lunar Highlands: Alha 81005 under Reinvestigation
Introduction: Lunar meteorites come from random sites on the Moon (including areas not visited by Apollo or Lunar missions) and so are crucial for understanding the development of the whole moon, and as ground truth for lunar remote sensing. Data from the Lunar Prospector and Clementine spacecraft show that, relative to the Apollo and Luna landing sites, most of the lunar surface has low abunda...
متن کاملDynamics of Space Free-Flying Robots with Flexible Appendages
A Space Free-Flying Robot (SFFR) includes an actuated base equipped with one or more manipulators to perform on-orbit missions. Distinct from fixed-based manipulators, the spacecraft (base) of a SFFR responds to dynamic reaction forces due to manipulator motions. In order to control such a system, it is essential to consider the dynamic coupling between the manipulators and the base. Explicit d...
متن کاملSome Aspects of Processing Extraterrestrial Lidar Data: Clementine, Near, Mola
The increasing volume of planetary lidar data is creating global datasets of unprecedented resolution and accuracy, and presenting new challenges. From 1971-72, when three Apollo missions carried laser altimeters to the Moon, to the Mars Global Surveyor mission operating the MOLA instrument for nearly 1000 days, the number of planetary ranges has increased by more than 5 orders of magnitude, an...
