Functional MRI Reveals the Critical Role of Broca’s Area in Speech Sound Disorders

چکیده
Introduction: Speech sound disorders (SSD) are the largest group of communication disorders observed in children requirin education services. However, to date, the neurological origin of SSD has not been researched extensively. We conducted a fu MRI (fMRI) study using the HUSH (Hemodynamics Unrelated to Sounds from Hardware) technique on 6 participants with SS of unknown etiology in comparison to 9 age-matched controls during an overt non-word repetition task. Preliminary results dem significant underactivation in Broca’s area, an area known to be crucial for speech production, for the patient group, suggesti critical role Broca’s area plays in SSD.

Broca’s area is classically associated with speech production. Recently, Broca’s area has also been implicated in speech perception and non-linguistic information processing. With respect to the latter function, Broca’s area is considered to be a central area in a network constituting the human mirror system, which maps observed or heard actions onto motor programs to execute analogous actions....

Sir, In a recent paper published in Brain, Dronkers and colleagues (2007) re-examined the brain damage in two historic patients of P. Paul Broca, Leborgne and Lelong, who had lost the ability to speak following brain damage. The observation of these cases lead Broca to suggest that the left inferior frontal lobe (later coined Broca’s area) is the crucial lesion location associated with acquired...
متن کاملUsing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to explore brain function: cortical representations of language critical areas
Pre-operative determination of the dominant hemisphere for speech and speech associated sensory and motor regions has been of great interest for the neurological surgeons. This dilemma has been of at most importance, but difficult to achieve, requiring either invasive (Wada test) or non-invasive methods (Brain Mapping). In the present study we have employed functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging...

متن کاملCytoarchitectonic and receptorarchitectonic organization in Broca's region and surrounding cortex
Broca’s region was originally described as a cortical site in the inferior frontal gyrus, where speech impairment occurs after brain lesions. However, this clinico-pathological definition does not define the underlying microstructural correlates. Two cytoarchitectonic areas (BA44, BA45) were identified as correlates of Broca’s region in the inferior frontal opercular and triangular parts, respe...
