چکیده
While AMN-3 clearly had other impacts on me, the conference had major benefi ts in terms of advancing one particular area of my research. I was extraordinarily fortunate to have in the audience during the talk I was giving focused on the work of Conrad Lendrum, one of my past PhD students, Michael Toney. Mike hails from SSRL (Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory), which is part of SLAC (Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, which is part of Stanford University, Palo Alto), California, USA (http://www-ssrl.slac.stanford.edu/), and is an expert in synchrotronbased X-ray techniques.

Light traveling from a medium with a high refractive index to a low refractive index experiences total refl ection when the incident angle exceeds the critical angle. The case of 100% refl ection is called total internal refl ection (TIR), in which case the light is confi ned within the medium having the higher refractive index. This phenomenon is used in optical transmission fi bers and light ...

Equivalent circuits containing frequency-variable radiation resistances are postulated for small monopole and small loop antennas above a ground plane. The equivalent circuits are valid below the fi rst natural resonance frequency. By adding an external series inductance or a parallel capacitance, the antenna’s Q is evaluated with the use of an invariant form for the refl ection coeffi cient. T...

متن کاملThe Shatsky Rise oceanic plateau structure from two-dimensional multichannel seismic refl ection profi les and implications for oceanic plateau formation
The Shatsky Rise is one of the largest oceanic plateaus, a class of volcanic features whose formation is poorly understood. It is also a plateau that was formed near spreading ridges, but the connection between the two features is unclear. The geologic structure of the Shatsky Rise can help us understand its formation. Deeply penetrating two-dimensional (2-D) multichannel seismic (MCS) refl ect...
