چکیده

We have been engaged in a series of projects in which Cassie, the SNePS cognitive agent, has been incorporated into a hardwareor software-simulated cognitive robot. In this paper, we present an informal summary of our approach to anchoring the abstract symbolic terms that denote Cassie’s mental entities in the lowerlevel structures used by embodied-Cassie to operate in the real (or simulated) world. We discuss anchoring in the domains of: perceivable entities and properties, actions, time, and language.

A Framework for Anchoring in Hybrid Deliberative Systems

A designer of robotic systems that act in the real world is faced with the problem of symbol anchoring. In a general theory symbol anchoring would consist of three distinct problems: 1) detection of the symbol, 2) extracting its properties, and 3) updating these properties over time. Solving all the three problems for every symbol is very hard and computationally expensive. We claim that this g...

Perceptual Anchoring with Indefinite Descriptions

Anchoring is the problem of how to connect, inside an artificial system, the symbol-level and signallevel representations of the same physical object. In most previous work on anchoring, symbol-level representations were meant to denote one specific object, like ‘the red pen p22’. These are also called definite descriptions. In this paper, we study anchoring in the case of indefinite descriptio...

Anchoring in a grounded layered architecture with integrated reasoning

The GLAIR grounded layered architecture with integrated reasoning for cognitive robots and intelligent autonomous agents has been used in a series of projects in which Cassie, the SNePS cognitive agent, has been incorporated into hardwareor software-simulated cognitive robots. In this paper, we present an informal, but coherent, overview of the GLAIR approach to anchoring the abstract symbolic ...

On the Role of Learning in Anchoring

A situated agent may include a symbolic subsystem that uses symbols to denote objects in the physical world. Anchoring is the problem of connecting these symbols to the perceptual representations of the same objects. Learning is an important, and in some cases essential means to acquire the basic ingredients needed to perform anchoring. In this note, we discuss some issues on the role of learni...
