چکیده

The Internet has revolutionized the way information is shared and accessed. Information retrieval is easier now than ever before. Since the rise of modern search engines, social networks, and ubiquitous access through devices such as smartphones and tablet or laptop computers, information is available at people’s fingertips almost any time of the day. As of 2010, 80% of Canadian households were connected to the Internet.1 One important domain in which the Internet plays an increasing role is health information access. Seventy percent of Canadians go online to search for medical or health-related information,2 and it has been reported that the Internet, rather than physicians, is the first source of information for many people.3 Considering how easy it is to Google search “bad cough,” it is not surprising that many people make an attempt at selfdiagnosis using the Internet before waiting hours in crowded walk-in clinics or emergency departments to consult professionals. The flow of information has fundamentally changed, and physicians have less control over health information relayed to patients. Not surprisingly, this paradigm shift has elicited varied and sometimes conflicting views about the value of the Internet as a tool to improve health care.

Usefulness of semi-automatic tools for airborne minefield detection

Potentialities of airborne minefield detection are nowadays investigated. Such approaches are based on the detection of minefield indicators on mono or multi-sensor airborne images. Most of the indicators will have to be located in vast area using high-resolution imagery. This leads to a tremendous amount of data to be interpreted. Hence semi-automatic detection techniques must be used to pre-f...

Path Planning for Mine Countermeasures Command and Control

The future success of Navy-Marine Corps operations in the extended littoral battlespace will depend critically on organic mine countermeasure capabilities. A battlegroup commander will require tools to rapidly detect, classify, and identify mines and form a tactical picture of mined areas, so a decision can be made to punch through the minefield, avoid it, or wait for dedicated mine countermeas...

Multi-sensor Data Fusion Based on Belief Functions and Possibility Theory: Close Range Antipersonnel Mine Detection and Remote Sensing Mined Area Reduction

Two main humanitarian mine action types may benefit from multi-sensor data fusion techniques: 1) close range antipersonnel (AP) mine detection and 2) mined area reduction. Data fusion for these two applications is presented here. Close range detection consists of detection of (sub-)surface anomalies that may be related to the presence of mines (e.g., detection of metals using a metal detector, ...

Gold, Silver and Iron in Iron Oxy-hydroxide Precipitate Formed in Process of Acid Mine Drainage

Oxidation of sulfide-containing ores is the main cause of Acid Mine Drainage (AMD), which is an environmental problem associated with both the abandoned and active mines. Iron-bearing sulfide minerals can be oxidized and form mine waters with high sulfate content, low pH, high electrical conductivity, high redox potential, and high concentrations of iron, aluminum, and other heavy metals. In th...
