چکیده

The post enrolment course timetabling problem (PECTP) is one type of university course timetabling problems, in which a set of events has to be scheduled in time slots and located in suitable rooms according to the student enrolment data. The PECTP is an NP-hard combinatorial optimization problem and hence is very difficult to solve to optimality. This paper proposes a hybrid approach to solve the PECTP in two phases. In the first phase, a guided search genetic algorithm is applied to solve the PECTP. This guided search genetic algorithm, integrates a guided search strategy and some local search techniques, where the guided search strategy uses a data structure that stores useful information extracted from previous good individuals to guide the generation of offspring into the population and the local search techniques are used to improve the quality of individuals. In the second phase, a tabu search heuristic is further used on the best solution obtained by the first phase to improve the optimality of the solution if possible. The proposed hybrid approach is tested on a set of benchmark PECTPs taken from the international timetabling competition in comparison with a set of state-of-the-art methods from the literature. The experimental results show that the proposed hybrid approach is able to produce promising results for the test PECTPs. Tabu-KM: A Hybrid Clustering Algorithm Based on Tabu Search Approach

The clustering problem under the criterion of minimum sum of squares is a non-convex and non-linear program, which possesses many locally optimal values, resulting that its solution often falls into these trap and therefore cannot converge to global optima solution. In this paper, an efficient hybrid optimization algorithm is developed for solving this problem, called Tabu-KM. It gathers the ...

A hybrid algorithm of Harmony Search and Bees Algorithm for a University Course Timetabling Problem

This paper is concerned with the development of a new hybrid metaheuristic approach for solving a practical university course timetabling problem in Vietnam. Our hybrid method is a combination of Harmony Search (HS) algorithm and the Bees algorithm. The proposed method has been tested on 14 real-world data instances and compared with some other metaheurisitic approaches, which are Variable Neig...

Generating Optimal Timetabling for Lecturers using Hybrid Fuzzy and Clustering Algorithms

UCTTP is a NP-hard problem, which must be performed for each semester frequently. The major technique in the presented approach would be analyzing data to resolve uncertainties of lecturers’ preferences and constraints within a department in order to obtain a ranking for each lecturer based on their requirements within a department where it is attempted to increase their satisfaction and develo...

Solving the Course Timetabling Problem with a Hybrid Heuristic Algorithm

The problem of curriculum-based course timetabling is studied in this work. In addition to formally defining the problem, we present a hybrid solution algorithm (Adaptive Tabu Search–ATS), which is aimed at minimizing violations of soft constraints. Within ATS, a new neighborhood and a mechanism for dynamically integrating Tabu Search with perturbation (from Iterated Local Search) are proposed ...

Hybridizing Meta-heuristics Approaches for Solving University Course Timetabling Problems

In this paper we have presented a combination of two metaheuristics, namely great deluge and tabu search, for solving the university course timetabling problem. This problem occurs during the assignment of a set of courses to specific timeslots and rooms within a working week and subject to a variety of hard and soft constraints. Essentially a set of hard constraints must be satisfied in order ...
