Value of evidence from syndromic surveillance with delayed reporting

چکیده
Introduction Taking into account reporting delays in surveillance systems is not methodologically trivial. Consequently, most use the date of the reception of data, rather than the (often unknown) date of the health event itself. The main drawback of this approach is the resulting reduction in sensitivity and specificity1. Combining syndromic data from multiple data streams (most health events may leave a “signature” in multiple data sources) may be performed in a Bayesian framework where the result is presented in the form of a posterior probability for a disease2.

Prevalence of sexually transmitted infections based on syndromic approach and associated factors among Iranian women
Background and purpose: Reproductive and sexual health related problems constitute one third of health problems among women aged 15 to 44 years. Sexually transmitted infections are a significant challenge for human development. We aimed to assess the prevalence of STIs and identify factors associated with among Iranian women. Materials and Methods: Through a cross-sectional study, 399 women ...
متن کاملThe use of syndromic surveillance for decision-making during the H1N1 pandemic: A qualitative study
BACKGROUND Although an increasing number of studies are documenting uses of syndromic surveillance by front line public health, few detail the value added from linking syndromic data to public health decision-making. This study seeks to understand how syndromic data informed specific public health actions during the 2009 H1N1 pandemic. METHODS Semi-structured telephone interviews were conduct...
متن کاملUsing Bayes' Rule to Define the Value of Evidence from Syndromic Surveillance
In this work we propose the adoption of a statistical framework used in the evaluation of forensic evidence as a tool for evaluating and presenting circumstantial "evidence" of a disease outbreak from syndromic surveillance. The basic idea is to exploit the predicted distributions of reported cases to calculate the ratio of the likelihood of observing n cases given an ongoing outbreak over the ...
متن کاملThe public health value of emergency department syndromic surveillance following a natural disaster.
During a recent natural disaster public health staff required timely and comprehensive surveillance of priority health conditions, including injury, mental health disorders and selected infectious diseases, to inform response and recovery activities. Although traditional surveillance is of value in such settings it is constrained by a focus on notifiable conditions and delays in reporting. The ...
