Tiling by rectangles and alternating current

چکیده
This paper is on tilings of polygons by rectangles. A celebrated physical interpretation of such tilings due to R.L. Brooks, C.A.B. Smith, A.H. Stone and W.T. Tutte uses directcurrent circuits. The new approach of the paper is an application of alternating-current circuits. The following results are obtained: • a necessary condition for a rectangle to be tilable by rectangles of given shapes; • a criterion for a rectangle to be tilable by rectangles similar to it but not all homothetic to it; • a criterion for a generic polygon to be tilable by squares. These results generalize the ones of C. Freiling, R. Kenyon, M. Laczkovich, D. Rinne and G. Szekeres.

Alternating sign matrices and tilings of Aztec rectangles
The problem of counting numbers of tilings of certain regions has long interested researchers in a variety of disciplines. In recent years, many beautiful results have been obtained related to the enumeration of tilings of particular regions called Aztec diamonds. Problems currently under investigation include counting the tilings of related regions with holes and describing the behavior of ran...
متن کاملOn Tilings of Quadrants and Rectangles and Rectangular Pattern
The problem of tiling rectangles by polyominoes generated large interest. A related one is the problem of tiling parallelograms by twisted polyominoes. Both problems are related with tilings of (skewed) quadrants by polyominoes. Indeed, if all tilings of a (skewed) quadrant by a tile set can be reduced to a tiling by congruent rectangles (parallelograms), this provides information about tilings...
متن کاملThe Z Alpern Multi-tower Theorem for Rectangles: a Tiling Approach
We provide a proof of the Alpern multi-tower theorem for Z d actions. We reformulate the theorem as a problem of measurably tiling orbits of a Z action by a collection of rectangles whose corresponding sides have no non-trivial common divisors. We associate to such a collection of rectangles a special family of generalized domino tilings. We then identify an intrinsic dynamic property of these ...
متن کاملTiling a Polygon with Two Kinds of Rectangles
We fix two rectangles with integer dimensions. We give a quadratic time algorithm which, given a polygon F as input, produces a tiling of F with translated copies of our rectangles (or indicates that there is no tiling). Moreover, we prove that any pair of tilings can be linked by a sequence of local transformations of tilings, called flips. This study is based on the use of J. H. Conway’s tili...
متن کاملTiling simply connected regions with rectangles
Abstract. In 1995, Beauquier, Nivat, Rémila, and Robson showed that tiling of general regions with two rectangles is NP-complete, except for a few trivial special cases. In a different direction, in 2005, Rémila showed that for simply connected regions by two rectangles, the tileability can be solved in quadratic time (in the area). We prove that there is a finite set of at most 10 rectangles f...
