BASIC UXO GATHERING SYSTEM (BUGS); MULTIPLE, SMALL, INEXPENSIVE ROBOTS for AUTONOMOUS UXO CLEARANCE

چکیده
The Naval Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technology Division (NAVEODTECHDIV) is conducting an exploratory development program for the development of small, inexpensive, robotic technologies that enable systems that will clear unexploded submunitions and mines from contaminated land areas. The concentration is on control methodologies to enable teams of small autonomous robots to work together to perform either Pick-Up-Carry-Away (PUCA) or Blow-In-Place (BIP) operations on large numbers of small unexploded ordnance. Technology demonstration systems of small teams (5 robots) are being developed to explore feasibility. A high level of autonomy is required so that only one or two operators can control a large team of robots, since manpower available for these hazardous clearance operations is limited. Low cost is also required, since some of the robots may be destroyed by UXO, and many robots are needed to efficiently perform

A Testbed for Evaluating Robot Team Interaction under Operator Supervision
The use of multiple low cost robotic mine hunters to provide rapid and complete area coverage is a promising new approach to the counter mine problem. Fetch 2 , in development, is a system of four robotic mine hunters that will be capable of cooperatively clearing a field under the supervision of a single operator. The robots feature advanced computational and mechanical components, yet are des...
متن کاملRelative importance of magnetic moments in UXO clearance applications
Surface magnetic anomaly observed in UXO clearance is mainly dipolar and, as a result, the dipole is the only moment used regularly in UXO applications. The dipole moment contains intensity of magnetization information but lacks shape information. Unlike dipole, higher-order moments, such as quadrupole and octupole, encode asymmetry properties of magnetization distribution within buried targets...
متن کاملPath Planning for Robotic Demining: Robust Sensor-based Coverage of Unstructured Environments and Probabilistic Methods
Demining and unexploded ordnance (UXO) clearance are extremely tedious and dangerous tasks. The use of robots bypasses the hazards and potentially increases the efficiency of both tasks. A first crucial step towards robotic mine/UXO clearance is to locate all the targets. This requires a path planner that generates a path to pass a detector over all points of a mine/UXO field, i.e., a planner t...
متن کاملEvaluating the Effects of Magnetic Susceptibility in Uxo Discrimination Problems
Past unexploded ordnance (UXO) clearance projects have demonstrated that the ability to detect UXO can be seriously hindered by the presence of magnetic rocks and soils. In particular, magnetic material affects the decay curve characteristics in electromagnetic surveys and this can adversely affect inversion calculations that try to estimate parameters of the UXO or answer the question of wheth...
متن کاملCharacterization and quantification of magnetic remanence in unexploded ordnance
Under the Range Rule (1997), the Department of Defense defines unexploded ordnance (UXO) as a piece of ordnance that has been deployed, but has not exploded. This study investigated a subset of UXO including artillery shells and mortars (projectiles), but excluding landmines. UXO contaminates approximately 15 million acres of land in the United States alone. The geophysical tools most frequentl...
