Scattering theory from microscopic first principles

چکیده
We sketch a derivation of abstract scattering theory from the microscopic first principles defined by Bohmian mechanics. We emphasize the importance of the flux-across-surfaces theorem for the derivation, and of randomness in the impact parameter of the initial wave function—even for an, inevitably inadequate, orthodox derivation. Dedicated to Joel Lebowitz, with love and admiration, for his 70th birthday. Supported in part by the DFG, by NSF Grant No. DMS95–04556, and by the INFN.

A Microscopic Derivation of the Quantum Mechanical Formal Scattering Cross Section
We prove that the empirical distribution of crossings of a “detector” surface by scattered particles converges in appropriate limits to the scattering cross section computed by stationary scattering theory. Our result, which is based on Bohmian mechanics and the flux-across-surfaces theorem, is the first derivation of the cross section starting from first microscopic principles.

متن کاملFirst-principles dynamics of electrons and phonons
First-principles calculations combining density functional theory and many-body perturbation theory can provide microscopic insight into the dynamics of electrons and phonons in materials. We review this theoretical and computational framework, focusing on perturbative treatments of scattering, dynamics and transport of coupled electrons and phonons. We discuss application of these first-princi...
متن کاملHow to Build a Credible Mesoscopic Theory
Electron transport in metallic systems is governed by four key principles of Fermi-liquid physics: (i) degeneracy, (ii) charge conservation, (iii) screening of the Coulomb potential, and (iv) scattering. They determine the character of metallic conduction and noise at mesoscopic scales, both near equilibrium and far from it. Their interplay is described by kinetic theory, the serious method of ...
متن کاملRaman scattering efficiency in LiTaO3 and LiNbO3 crystals
LiTaO3 and LiNbO3 crystals are investigated here in a combined experimental and theoretical study that uses Raman spectroscopy in a complete set of scattering geometries and corresponding density-functional theory calculations to provide microscopic information on their vibrational properties. The Raman scattering efficiency is computed from first principles in order to univocally assign the me...
