Prediction of Medical Outcomes with Modern Modelling Techniques

چکیده
Background Prediction rules for intracranial traumatic findings in patients with minor head injury are designed to reduce the use of computed tomography (CT) without missing patients at risk for complications. This study investigates whether alternative modelling techniques might improve the applicability and simplicity of such prediction rules. Methods We included 3181 patients with minor head injury who had received CT scans between February 2002 and August 2004. Of these patients 243 (7.6%) had intracranial traumatic findings and 17 (0.5%) underwent neurosurgical intervention. We analyzed sensitivity, specificity and area under the ROC curve (AUC-value) to compare the performance of various modelling techniques by 10x10 cross-validation. The techniques included logistic regression, Bayes network, Chi-squared Automatic Interaction Detection (CHAID), neural net, support vector machines, Classification And Regression Trees (CART) and “decision list” models. results The cross-validated performance was best for the logistic regression model (AUC 0.78), followed by the Bayes network model and the neural net model (both AUC 0.74). The other models performed poorly (AUC<0.70). The advantage of the Bayes network model was that it provided a graphical representation of the relationships between the predictors and the outcome. conclusions No alternative modelling technique outperformed the logistic regression model. However, the Bayes network model had a presentation format which provided more detailed insights into the structure of the prediction problem. The search for methods with good predictive performance and an attractive presentation format should continue. Prediction of intracranial findings on CT-scans by alternative modelling techniques 29

Modern modelling techniques are data hungry: a simulation study for predicting dichotomous endpoints
BACKGROUND Modern modelling techniques may potentially provide more accurate predictions of binary outcomes than classical techniques. We aimed to study the predictive performance of different modelling techniques in relation to the effective sample size ("data hungriness"). METHODS We performed simulation studies based on three clinical cohorts: 1282 patients with head and neck cancer (with ...
متن کاملContinuous Energy Values of 3-Amino-4-Nitraminofurazan Molecule by Modern Optimization Techniques
The conformational energy values of 3-amino-4-nitraminofurazan (C2N4O3H2) molecule changing with two torsion angles were firstly calculated using density functional theory (DFT) with Lee-Young-Parr correlation functional and 6-31 G(d) basis set on Gaussian Program. And then, these obtained discrete data were made continuous by using Fuzzy Logic Modelling (FLM) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN...
متن کاملNumerical modelling of the underground roadways in coal mines– uncertainties caused by use of empirical-based downgrading methods and in situ stresses
Numerical modelling techniques are not new for mining industry and civil engineering projects anymore. These techniques have been widely used for rock engineering problems such as stability analysis and support design of roadways and tunnels, caving and subsidence prediction, and stability analysis of rock slopes. Despite the significant advancement in the computational mechanics and availabili...
متن کاملPrediction of mortality in patients admitted to intensive care units, A comparison of three data mining techniques: a brief report.
Background: Early outcome prediction of hospitalized patients is critical because the intensivists are constantly striving to improve patients' survival by taking effective medical decisions about ill patients in Intensive Care Units (ICUs). Despite rapid progress in medical treatments and intensive care technology, the analysis of outcomes, including mortality prediction, has been a challenge ...
متن کاملRadiomics modelling of IMRT induced acute rectal toxicity using clinical and magnetic resonance imaging features
Introduction: Rectal toxicity is a dose limiting issue in prostate cancer radiotherapy. Prediction of these effects may be used to tailor the therapy. The purpose of this work was to develop predictive radiomic models based on clinical, dosimetric and radiomic features extracted from rectal wall magnetic resonance image (MRI). Materials and Methods: This st...
