Scientific Discovery on Positive Data via Belief Revision
نویسندگان
چکیده
Contemporary approaches to inductive logic divide into two schools distinguished by how each perceives the investment of a rational agent in a given hypothesis. For the probabilist school, investments are degrees-of-belief, scattered over all the hypotheses in play. For advocates of Formal Learning Theory, an investment has a more absolute character, and is designated as \acceptance." The di erence between belief and acceptance is thoroughly treated in [Cohen, 1992]. SuÆce it here to say that acceptance can be just as provisional as belief, but is more qualitative. It represents deliberate selection of a particular hypothesis as the one to elaborate and test, and to represent as the most interesting and viable at a particular moment of investigation. Belief is an involuntary feeling of conviction and carries no intellectual commitments. The distinction between belief and acceptance is parallel to the moral distinction between desire and consent. In both cases, the former is often but not always a precursor to the latter, and only the latter involves some kind of personal accountability.

An interactive environment for the modeling and discovery of scientific knowledge
Existing tools for scientific modeling offer little support for improving models in response to data, whereas computational methods for scientific knowledge discovery provide few opportunities for user input. In this paper, we present a language for stating process models and background knowledge in terms familiar to scientists, along with an interactive environment for knowledge discovery that...
متن کاملAbductive Reasoning: Logical Investigations into Discovery and Explanation
This talk will be a panoramic view of my recently published book at Springer. This book is a contribution to the study of abductive reasoning, providing logical foundations and a sample of several applications. Divided into three parts on the conceptual framework, the logical foundations, and the applications, this monograph takes the reader for a comprehensive tour through the taxonomy of abdu...
متن کاملTaxonomy Revision in Botany: A Simulation of Historical Data
In this abstract we present ReTAX, a system for taxonomy revision in Botany. The function of ReTAX is to revise, and eventually modify, a taxonomic hierarchy as novel inconsistent data are provided. The system has been applied to replicate some taxonomic revisions which have taken place historically in the botanical family Ericaceae. As noted by different researchers (e.g., Lakatos, 1976; Kulka...
متن کاملInductive Revision of Quantitative Process Models
Most research on computational scientific discovery has focused on developing an initial model, but an equally important task involves revising a model in response to new data. In this paper, we present an approach that represents candidate models as sets of quantitative processes and that treats revision as search through a model space which is guided by time-series observations and constraine...
متن کاملInternational Price Discovery in Stock Markets - A Unique Intensity Based Information Share
In this paper we propose a new measure for contributions to price discovery based on Russell’s (1999) autoregressive conditional intensity model. While previous studies rely on equally spaced high frequency data, we use the information conveyed by quote revision intensities to determine a market’s information share. Thereby, we account for the irregular nature of the data. Moreover, in contrast...
