The current study was undertaken to develop and evaluate the psychometric properties of a new measure, the Child Sexual Abuse Stereotypes Scale. Scale items were developed using data from two unpublished studies (McCardell, 2008; Mir, 2006), which elicited cultural beliefs and perceptions of adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse among university undergraduates. Two subscales, Emotions (53 items) and Characteristics (74 items), were developed and administered online to a sample of 141 women and 42 men drawn from university undergraduates and the population at large. Reliability and validity analyses suggest that the CSA Stereotypes Scale has satisfactory psychometric properties. Four factors for the Emotions subscale and three factors for the Characteristics subscale emerged from exploratory factor analyses. The CSA Stereotypes Scale provides a much needed measure of people's perceptions of both the stereotypic emotions experienced toward and the stereotypic beliefs about the characteristics of adult survivors of CSA.
