چکیده

Title of Document: EFFECTS OF NITROGEN AND CALCIUM ON PHOTOSYNTHESIS AND METABOLIC ACTIVITY IN ACER SACCHARUM IN THE CATSKILL MOUNTAINS. Shawna Joy Behling Directed By: Associate Professor Dr. Joseph Sullivan Plant Sciences and Landscape Architecture The Catskill Mountains in southern New York have received some of the most acidic rainfall in the country for the past 50 years. Acid deposition on these thin soils may deplete the concentration of calcium and other ions in the soil solution and mobilize other ions that can be harmful to sugar maple (Acer saccharum) rooting systems. The effects of fertilizers on the metabolism and photosynthesis rates of sugar maple are of great interest to both farmers and ecologists. In this study, 12 plots in a 60-year-old sugar maple dominated forest were treated with no fertilizer, nitrogen, calcium, or nitrogen and calcium together. Photosynthesis was measured with a LiCor 6400. Metabolic heat rate was measured with a MC-DSC calorimeter. While some sampling periods showed significant responses to some treatments, the study as a whole suggests the addition of calcium and/or nitrogen had minimal effects on photosynthesis or metabolism. Photosynthetic and Growth Response of Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.) Mature Trees and Seedlings to Calcium, Magnesium, and Nitrogen Additions in the Catskill Mountains, NY, USA

Decline of sugar maple in North American forests has been attributed to changes in soil calcium (Ca) and nitrogen (N) by acidic precipitation. Although N is an essential and usually a limiting factor in forests, atmospheric N deposition may cause N-saturation leading to loss of soil Ca. Such changes can affect carbon gain and growth of sugar maple trees and seedlings. We applied a 22 factorial ...

Influences of a calcium gradient on soil inorganic nitrogen in the Adirondack Mountains, New York.

Studies of the long-term impacts of acidic deposition in Europe and North America have prompted growing interest in understanding the dynamics linking the nitrogen (N) and calcium (Ca) cycles in forested watersheds. While it has been shown that increasing concentrations of nitrate (NO3-) through atmospheric deposition or through nitrification can increase Ca loss, the reciprocal effects of Ca o...

Effect of Whey Permeate and Yeast Extract on Metabolic Activity of Bifidobacterium Animalis Subsp. Lactis Bb 12

In fermented products containing Bifidobacteria, factors such as organic acid concentration and b-galactosidase activity are important in the development of flavor and texture of final products. Both the process conditions and medium components have significant effects on fluctuation of such factors. The effects of whey permeate powder and yeast extract concentrations, as nitrogen sources was i...

Responses of Acer saccharum canopy trees and saplings to P, K and lime additions under high N deposition.

Heavy atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition has been associated with altered nutrient cycling, and even N saturation, in forest ecosystems previously thought to be N-limited. This observation has prompted application to such forests of non-N mineral nutrients as a mitigation measure. We examined leaf gas-exchange, leaf chemistry and leaf and shoot morphological responses of Acer saccharum Marsh. ...

Nitrogen cycling in a northern hardwood forest: Do species matter?

To investigate the influence of individual tree species on nitrogen (N) cycling in forests, we measured key characteristics of the N cycle in small single-species plots of five dominant tree species in the Catskill Mountains of New York State. The species studied were sugar maple (Acer saccharum), American beech (Fagus grandifolia), yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis), eastern hemlock (Tsuga c...
