چکیده
A 25-year-old man was admitted on June 17, 1967, with a right hemiplegia of sudden onset. Three episodes of pain, swelling, and red blotchy discoloration of both feet and legs, each lasting 2 to 4 weeks, had occurred over the preceding year. During this period, he noticed transient burning and tingling in his fingers. He was apyrexial and normotensive; pulse rate 90/ min.; atrial fibrillation was evident. Patchy reddishblue discoloration of both feet and toes was noted, and the right fifth toe was cyanotic. The right foot was colder than the left, with diminished pulsation of the right dorsalis pedis artery. Apart from irregularity, auscultation of the heart was normal. Preoperative Emboli in a Pregnant Woman with Myxoma
The left atrium is the most common location of myxomas, which are benign tumors. Only a few cases of myxomas in pregnancies have been reported. Our thorough medical literature search showed only 17 reported cases in the course of pregnancy. Myxomas during pregnancy and in the preterm period constitute a serious phenomenon that can mimic an early sign of a life-threatening pathology like severe ...
متن کاملSkin Ulceration Due to Metastatic Emboli from Ventricular Myxoma
We report a case of left ventricular myxoma metastasizing to blood vessels of extremities and causing cutaneous ulceration. Most of left ventricular myxomas are symptomatic (92.7%). Systemic embolism is the most common manifestation (50%) and often leads to death. The propensity of cardiac myxomas to embolize is thought to be related to tumor morphology, with friable and gelatinous myxomas bein...
متن کاملEnhanced detection of intracardiac sources of cerebral emboli by transesophageal echocardiography.
We performed transesophageal echocardiography in 50 consecutive hospitalized patients with recent transient ischemic attack or stroke of embolic origin to determine whether transesophageal echocardiography is more sensitive than transthoracic echocardiography in detection of possible intracardiac sources of embolism. Twenty-six of 50 patients with a negative transthoracic echocardiogram for pot...
متن کاملSurviving catastrophic disintegration of a large left atrial myxoma: the importance of multi-disciplinary team
Atrial myxomas are the most common primary cardiac tumors, representing ∼50% of all benign cardiac tumors. Patients with a left atrial myxoma (LAM) generally present with symptoms of mechanical obstruction of blood flow, systemic emboli or constitutional symptoms. Embolic complications may occur any time with progression of the tumor; therefore, myxoma is usually considered an indication for ur...
متن کاملYoung stroke, cardiac myxoma, and multiple emboli: a case report and literature review.
Cardiac myxoma is a source of emboli to the vascular tree, especially to the central nervous system. Although it is rare, its early recognition is particularly important because of its unique clinical features of subsequently leading to intracerebral or subarachnoid hemorrhage, even brain metastases, and its potential for surgical cure. Missing the diagnosis may lead to devastating results, inc...
