Residual Activity of Granular Starch - Encapsulated Bacillus thuringiensis
نویسنده
چکیده
Residual insecticidal activity of Bacilltls thtlringiensis Berliner encapsulated in cornstarch was detern1ined by using two separate tests. In the first test, granules with various additives were placed in whorls ofcorn plants in the field, collected over time, and bioassayed against neonate Ostrinia ntlbilalis (Hubner). During a wet year (1990) when 10 em rain fell during the exposure time, insecticidal activity of B. tlltlringiensis encapsulated in starch granules was higher than that of B. tlwringiensis in a commercial formulation. In a dry year (1989), we observed no significant differences in activity. In 1991, when 3 em rain fell midway through the study, the commercial fornmlation had less activity than two of the starch formulations. In the second test, field efficacy was measured at two locations. In this study, we examined the effect of an early versus a late application of toxicants when whorl-stage plants were infested with laboratory-reared O. ntlbilalis larvae over a 10-d period. Granules were applied either on the 1st d of insect infestation (early) or after the 7th d of infestation (late). The late application was significantly more efficacious than the early application. B. tlwringiensis granules consistently prevented damage by O. ntlbilalis as well as or better than a chemical insecticide for the length of the study.

Laboratory and field tests of spray-dried and granular formulations of a Bacillus thuringiensis strain with insecticidal activity against the sugarcane borer.
Formulations of Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner (Bt) with insecticidal activity against the sugarcane borer, Diatraea saccharalis Fabricius (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), were developed and tested under laboratory and field conditions. The formulations were prepared using biodegradable polymers such as modified corn starch as an encapsulating agent, gelatin as an adherent, powdered sugarcane as a fe...

A semi-field bioassay method using commonly available laundry tubs evaluated efficacy and residual activity of 6 granular corncob formulations of Bacillus thuringiensis serovar israelensis against laboratory-reared late 3rd- and early 4th-instar larvae of Aedes taeniorhynchus introduced to the tubs. These formulations produced appreciable larval mortalities (up to 75%) for 9 days posttreatment,...
متن کاملLaboratory Study of Microbial Insecticide Produced by the Bacteria Bacillus thuringiensis of Starch Factory Sewage for Biological Control of Larvae Culex pipiens
Background & Objective: Epidemic of dangerous diseases caused by Culex pipiens’ bites prompted us to focus on these groups of insects. Today, the most successful biological insecticides are produced by the bacteria of the genus Bacillus, which in the production phase of spores, makes crystalline endotoxin protein. This protein can be activated upon entering the insect’s intestine in alkali...
متن کاملAdherent Starch Granules for Encapsulation of Insect Control Agents
J. Econ. EntomoI. 85(4): 1425-1433 (1992) ABSTRACT Granule carriers for insect control agents have been used for many years, especially for control of soil-borne pests. Granular baits have not been practical for foliar application because they do not stick well and are susceptible to removal by wind or rain. A simple and economic technique to prepare adherent granules has been developed. The gr...

Bacillus thuringiensis serovar medellin strain 163-131 and Bacillus thuringiensis serovar jegathesan (B.t.jeg.) strain 367 are very toxic to mosquito larvae. However, they are 10 times less toxic than Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (B.t.i.) to mosquito larvae under laboratory conditions. Lyophilized powders were produced from these strains and their toxicities were compared to that of ...
