Esterase gene frequency differences and linkage equilibrium in Drosophila virilis populations from different ecological habitats.

چکیده
In order to study the gene frequency and linkage equilibrium in natural populations, about 5740 chromosomes of Drosophila virilis flies from eight natural populations were analyzed by the null strain method for two linked esterase loci. The frequencies of these esterase genes appear to depend on habitat characteristics rather than on geographical distribution. The populations kept a high degree of linkage equilibrium among them (D-.005).

Dynamics of Correlated Genetic Systems. V. Rates of Decay of Linkage Disequilibria in Experimental Populations of DROSOPHILA MELANOGASTER.
The dynamic behavior of four-locus gametic frequency distributions was studied in five replicate cage populations of Drosophila melanogaster for up to 50 generations. The joint frequency distributions were resolved into gene frequencies and various disequilibrium measures. In addition, F statistics for marginal single-locus genotypic frequency distributions were followed through time. The gene ...
متن کاملEvidence for selection at the fused locus of Drosophila virilis.
The genomic DNA sequence of a 2.4-kb region of the X-linked developmental gene fused was determined in 15 Drosophila virilis strains. One common replacement polymorphism is observed, where a negatively charged aspartic amino acid is replaced by the noncharged amino acid alanine. This replacement variant is located within the serine/threonine kinase domain of the fused gene and is present in app...
متن کاملGenetic background and the fitness of allozymes.
Experimental perturbations of gene frequency at the esterase-5 locus in Drosophila pseudoobscura were carried out in a series of population cages started with differing numbers of founder chromosomes. Cages founded with few chromosomes showed changes in gene frequency at the allozyme locus. Such changes were less marked in cages founded with a larger sample of chromosomes. These experiments sho...
متن کاملGene flow and the geographical distribution of a molecular polymorphism in Drosophila pseudoobscura.
This paper discusses the relation between the geographical distribution of an enzyme polymorphism and population structure in Drosophila pseudoobscura. California populations of this species living in very different montane and lowland habitats separated by several kilometers are similar to each other in the frequency of an esterase allele. Previous estimates suggest that gene flow is too limit...
متن کاملEvolution of the Alpha-Esterase Duplication within the Montana Subphylad of the Virilis Species Group of Drosophila.
Previous studies on linkage disequilibrium involving four tightly linked genes that code for the alpha-esterases of Drosophila montana suggest that these loci arose from a primitive esterase gene by gene duplication, followed by tandem duplication (Roberts and Baker 1973). We have examined the esterase variants in the closely related species, lacicola, flavomontana and borealis. These studies r...
