Exogenous energy sources for spermatozoa in cervical mucus of the cow at oestrus.

چکیده
Bovine spermatozoa have been shown to metabolize exogenous substrates both aerobically and anaerobically (Mann, 1964). Fructose (Mann, 1946) and sorbitol (King & Mann, 1958) have been unequivocally identified in seminal plasma, but evidence for the presence of metabolizable substrates in the cervical mucus rests on much less secure foundations. A number of reports that glucose is present in cervical mucus have appeared and indeed Doyle (1958) proposed to use the presence of glucose in human cervical mucus as an index of ovulation. This test has not attained widespread acceptance although there is a general impression that the sugar is present (see e.g. Moghissi, 1973). The original authority for the presence of glucose in bovine cervical mucus at oestrus is Olds & VanDemark (1957) who used, as others have done since, measurements of reducing value which are appropriate for deproteinized

A novel farm technology to quantify dairy cow cervix morphology: oestrus versus non-oestrus models
The objective was to quantify and compare cow cervical morphology on oestrus vs. non-oestrus daysusing a new farm technology. The cervical tissues were videotaped using a cervixscope involving newcamera equipment in four Holstein cows on multiple oestrus and non-oestrus days to score tissue morphology as altered by oestrus. The non-oestrous days were in diestrus phases. The videotaped records w...
متن کاملVariations in certain properties of bovine cervical mucus during the oestrous cycle.
THE epithelium of the cervix and upper vagina of the cow and certain other animals produces a mucous secretion in which, according to Woodman & Hammond [1925], may be found a mucoprotein belonging to the class of mucin bodies containing mucoitin sulphuric acid, since they identified glucosamine in a specimen of cervical mucus. The chemical composition of this secretion does not appear to have b...
متن کاملDetermination of the proper time for mating after oestrous synchronisation during anoestrous or oestrous by measuring electrical resistance of cervical mucus in ewes
The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether the electrical resistance values of the cervical mucus and/or blood οestradiol-17β and progesterone concentrations at mating, after oestrous synchronisation during the anoestrous or oestrous period in ewes, are related to fertility. Oestrus was induced by medroxyprogesterone acetate-impregnated intravaginal sponges (Veramix, Upjohn, US...
متن کاملSperm counts in enzymatically liquefied cervical mucus: quantitative validation using donor cervical mucus.
The post-coital test evaluates the penetration of spermatozoa into cervical mucus; it relies on subjective measurements and therefore lacks precision. Enzymatic liquefaction of cervical mucus allows sperm concentration to be measured in post-coital test samples, but the reliability of such measurements is not known. Donor cervical mucus was used as a model to test the accuracy and sensitivity o...
متن کاملThe movement of human spermatozoa in cervical mucus.
Movement characteristics of freely swimming spermatozoa were studied with high-speed cinemicrography. At 21 degrees C, flagellar beat frequency was higher in midcycle human cervical mucus than in native semen or Tyrode's solution; the beat shape differed, possessing diminished amplitude and wavelength. Although the spermatozoa swam straighter in the mucus, the progressive swimming speeds did no...
