Dependencies between ontology design parameters
نویسنده
چکیده
Development and use of ontologies is increasing, but hampered by new challenges, such as determining which ontologies to reuse and which language to use. Ontology development methodologies provide scenarios, but they do not address the dependencies between the permutations at the different stages in the development process. To improve the efficiency and effectiveness of this endeavour, we group inputs into parameters and examine the dependencies between them. The parameters considered are: nine main purpose(s) of the ontology, reuse of the three main types of ontologies, eight different ways for bottom-up ontology development, eight ontology languages, and four types of reasoning services. All dependencies between these parameters have been assessed and useful combinations are motivated. The dependencies are due to, primarily, computational challenges and types of subject domain of the ontologies. This analysis is assessed against a set of ontologies and a survey among ontology developers, whose results concur with the theoretical assessment.

An Ontology Design Pattern for Dynamic Relative Relationships
This research describes an ontology design pattern for dynamically conceptualizing, establishing, tracking, and updating relative relationships and dependencies between entities (real or representational) of a physical, temporal, and/or importance scope. We present a Relative Relationship (RR) Pattern, associated axioms, an implementation of current geometric scale translation research, a detai...
متن کاملOntological Concepts Dependencies Driven Methodology to Design Ontology-Based Databases
Nowadays, a large number of applications are producing and manipulating ontological data. Managing a huge amount of these data needs the development of scalable solutions. Ontology-based database (OBDB) is one of these solutions. An OBDB stores in the same repository ontological data and the ontology describing their meanings. Several architectures supporting these OBDB were proposed by academi...
متن کاملAn Environment for Distributed Ontology Development Based on Dependency Management
This paper describes a system for supporting development of ontology in a distributed manner. By a distributed manner, we mean ontology is divided into several component ontologies, which are developed by different developers in a distributed environment. The target ontology is obtained by compiling the component ontologies. These component ontologies are identified according to their conceptua...

Literature recommends considering specific context during ontology design, and highlights that a different context i...
متن کاملOn Equality-Generating Dependencies in Ontology Querying - Preliminary Report
In ontology-based data access, data are queried through an ontology that offers a representation of the domain of interest. In this context, correct answers are those entailed by the logical theory constituted by the data and the ontology. Traditional database constraints like tuple-generating dependencies (TGDs) and equality-generating dependencies (EGDs) are a useful tool for ontology specifi...
