A refinement of normal approximation to Poisson binomial

چکیده
Let X1,X2, . . . ,Xn be independent Bernoulli random variables with P(Xj = 1) = 1 − P(Xj = 0)= pj and let Sn := X1 +X2 + ···+Xn. Sn is called a Poisson binomial random variable and it is well known that the distribution of a Poisson binomial random variable can be approximated by the standard normal distribution. In this paper, we use Taylor’s formula to improve the approximation by adding some correction terms. Our result is better than before and is of order 1/n in the case p1 = p2 = ··· = pn.

A continuous approximation fitting to the discrete distributions using ODE
The probability density functions fitting to the discrete probability functions has always been needed, and very important. This paper is fitting the continuous curves which are probability density functions to the binomial probability functions, negative binomial geometrics, poisson and hypergeometric. The main key in these fittings is the use of the derivative concept and common differential ...
متن کاملOn Computing the Distribution Function for the Sum of Independent and Non-identical Random Indicators
The Poisson binomial distribution is the distribution of the sum of independent and non-identical random indicators. Each indicator follows a Bernoulli distribution with individual success probability. When all success probabilities are equal, the Poisson binomial distribution is a binomial distribution. The Poisson binomial distribution has many applications in different areas such as reliabil...
متن کاملON MODALITY AND DIVISIBILITY OF POISSON AND BINOMIAL MIXTURES
Some structural aspects of mixtures, in general, have been previously investigated by the author in [I] and [2]. The aim of this article is to investigate some important structural properties of the special cases of Poisson and binomial mixtures in detail. Some necessary and sufficient conditions are arrived at for different modality and divisibility properties of a Poisson mixture based o...
متن کاملDiscussion on Skew-normal Approximation of a Binomial Distribution
Approximating a binomial distribution by a suitable normal distribution is a well known practice, and widely discussed in introductory level statistics books. Recently it has been shown (in Chang et al. (2008)) that the skew-normal distributions can provide a far better approximation than the normal ones. This article revisits the approximation issue and other related inferential aspects. Thoug...
متن کاملON NEGATIVE BINOMIAL APPROXIMATION TO k-RUNS
The distributions of the run occurrences for a sequence of independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) experiments are usually obtained by combinatorial methods (see Balakrishnan and Koutras (2002, Chapter 5)) and the resulting formulae are often very tedious, while the distributions for non i.i.d. experiments are generally intractable. It is therefore of practical interest to find a suita...
