چکیده

In this paper we introduce 4–8 subdivision, a new scheme that generalizes the fourdirectional box spline of class C to surfaces of arbitrary topological type. The crucial advantage of the proposed scheme is that it uses bisection refinement as an elementary refinement operation, rather than more commonly used face or vertex splits. In the uniform case, bisection refinement results in doubling, rather than quadrupling of the number of faces in a mesh. Adaptive bisection refinement, automatically generates conforming variable-resolution meshes in contrast to face and vertex split methods which require an postprocessing step to make an adaptively refined mesh conforming. The fact that the size of faces decreases more gradually with refinement allows one to have greater control over the resolution of a refined mesh. It also makes it possible to achieve higher smoothness while using small stencils (the size of the stencils used by our scheme is similar to Loop subdivision). We show that the subdivision surfaces produced by the 4–8 scheme are C continuous almost everywhere, except at extraordinary vertices where they are is C-continuous.

Using Semi-Regular 4-8 Meshes for Subdivision Surfaces

Semi-regular 4–8 meshes are refinable triangulated quadrangulations. They provide a powerful hierarchical structure for multiresolution applications. In this paper, we show how to decompose the DooSabin and Catmull-Clark subdivision schemes using 4–8 refinement. The proposed technique makes it possible to use these classical subdivision surfaces with semi-regular 4–8 meshes. Additional

Computational analysis of 4-8 meshes with application to surface simplification using global error

We present computational results when computing approximations of a class of meshes with subdivision connectivity, known as 4-8 meshes. We consider algorithms using vertex decimation or vertex insertion. We explain that a full decomposition of a 4-8 mesh using global error can be obtained with an (n logn) decimation algorithm. Our algorithm produces progressive and adaptive representations of t...

Tuning Subdivision by Minimising Gaussian Curvature Variation Near Extraordinary Vertices

We present a method for tuning primal stationary subdivision schemes to give the best possible behaviour near extraordinary vertices with respect to curvature variation. Current schemes lead to a limit surface around extraordinary vertices for which the Gaussian curvature diverges, as demonstrated by Karčiauskas et al. [KPR04]. Even when coefficients are chosen such that the subsubdominant eige...
