چکیده

[1] Stable nitrogen isotopic determination of particulate organic matter over the eastern North Atlantic in spring 2000 reveal a region of low natural abundance of N relative to N between 26 N and 32 N along 20 W. This light isotopic signal, together with phytopigment data and persistently elevated nitrate to phosphate ratios in the upper thermocline, suggest that nitrogen fixation provides a local dominant supply of nitrogen to phytoplankton over part of the eastern North Atlantic. These independent biogeochemical proxies are coincident with a region of enhanced atmospheric dust deposition, as suggested by an atmospheric transport model. Hence, the atmospheric dust events may spatially and temporally constrain the distribution of N2 fixers.

An iron curtain in the Atlantic Ocean forms a biogeochemical divide.

The concept of biogeochemical provinces in the ocean was implicit in Longhurst’s (1) classic monograph, Ecological Geography of the Sea. Longhurst identified distinct oceanic zones based on the relationships of oceanic biology (using chlorophyll, a proxy for phytoplankton biomass, and primary production) to physical forcing (e.g., surface currents, mixing depth, and upwelling). As we have advan...

The Distribution of Dissolved Iron in the West Atlantic Ocean

Iron (Fe) is an essential trace element for marine life. Extremely low Fe concentrations limit primary production and nitrogen fixation in large parts of the oceans and consequently influence ocean ecosystem functioning. The importance of Fe for ocean ecosystems makes Fe one of the core chemical trace elements in the international GEOTRACES program. Despite the recognized importance of Fe, our ...

Niche construction by non-diazotrophs for N2 fixers in the eastern tropical North Atlantic Ocean

Diazotrophic dinitrogen (N2) fixation contributes ~76% to “new” nitrogen inputs to the sunlit open ocean, but environmental factors determining N2 fixation rates are not well constrained. Excess phosphate (phosphate–nitrate/16 > 0) and iron availability control N2 fixation rates in the eastern tropical North Atlantic (ETNA), but it remains an open question how excess phosphate is generated with...

Modeling Atlantic Fe and PO4 limitations on N2-fixation

Introduction Conclusions References Tables Figures Back Close Full Screen / Esc Abstract Introduction Conclusions References Tables Figures Back Close Full Screen / Esc Abstract The overarching goal of this study is to simulate subsurface N* (sensu, Gruber and Sarmiento, 1997) anomaly patterns in the North Atlantic Ocean and determine the basin wide rates of N 2 fixation that are required to do...

Environmental Forcing of Nitrogen Fixation in the Eastern Tropical and Sub-Tropical North Atlantic Ocean

During the winter of 2006 we measured nifH gene abundances, dinitrogen (N(2)) fixation rates and carbon fixation rates in the eastern tropical and sub-tropical North Atlantic Ocean. The dominant diazotrophic phylotypes were filamentous cyanobacteria, which may include Trichodesmium and Katagnymene, with up to 10(6) L(-1)nifH gene copies, unicellular group A cyanobacteria with up to 10(5) L(-1)n...
