Craters on asteroids: Reconciling diverse impact records with a common impacting population

چکیده
O’Brien and Greenberg [O’Brien, D.P., Greenberg, R., 2005. Icarus 178, 179–212] developed a self-consistent numerical model of the collisional and dynamical evolution of the main-belt and NEA populations that was tested against a diverse range of observational and theoretical constraints. In this paper, we use those results to update the asteroid cratering model of Greenberg et al. [Greenberg, R., Nolan, M.C., Bottke, W.F., Kolvoord, R.A., Veverka, J., 1994. Icarus 107, 84–97; Greenberg, R., Bottke, W.F., Nolan, M., Geissler, P., Petit, J., Durda, D.D., Asphaug, E., Head, J., 1996. Icarus 120, 106–118], and show that the main-belt asteroid population from the O’Brien and Greenberg collisional/dynamical evolution modeling is consistent with the crater records on Gaspra, Ida, Mathilde, and Eros, the four asteroids that have been observed by spacecraft. © 2006 Elsevier Inc. Doublet craters on Venus
Of the impact craters on Earth larger than 20 km in diameter, 10–15% (3 out of 28) are doublets, having been formed by the simultaneous impact of two well-separated projectiles. The most likely scenario for their formation is the impact of well-separated binary asteroids. If a population of binary asteroids is capable of striking the Earth, it should also be able to hit the other terrestrial pl...

Context. Recent lunar crater studies have revealed an asymmetric distribution of rayed craters on the lunar surface. The asymmetry is related to the synchronous rotation of the Moon: there is a higher density of rayed craters on the leading hemisphere compared with the trailing hemisphere. Rayed craters represent generally the youngest impacts. Aims. The purpose of this paper is to test the hyp...
متن کاملMars/moon Cratering Rate Ratio Estimates
This article presents a method to adapt the lunar production function, i.e. the frequency of impacts with a given size of a formed crater as discussed by Neukum et al. (2001), to Mars. This requires to study the nature of crater-forming projectiles, the impact rate difference, and the scaling laws for the impact crater formation. These old-standing questions are reviewed, and examples for the r...

found we could duplicate the observed fraction of doublet craters found on Earth, Venus, and Mars. Our results suggest At least 10% (3 out of 28) of the largest known impact craters that any search for asteroid satellites should place emphasis on Earth and a similar fraction of all impact structures on on km-sized Earth-crossing asteroids with short-rotation Venus are doublets (i.e., have a com...
متن کاملThe missing large impact craters on Ceres
Asteroids provide fundamental clues to the formation and evolution of planetesimals. Collisional models based on the depletion of the primordial main belt of asteroids predict 10-15 craters >400 km should have formed on Ceres, the largest object between Mars and Jupiter, over the last 4.55 Gyr. Likewise, an extrapolation from the asteroid Vesta would require at least 6-7 such basins. However, C...
