OPI NION Highlights on HIV eradication in 2013

چکیده
Virological remarks for HIV cure and eradication Latently HIV-1-infected cells are rare (especially in peripheral blood), but undistinguishable from uninfected cells, thus making their clearance extremely demanding. In addition, despite several efforts, a real consensus on mechanisms by which persistent HIV-1 reservoirs are established and maintained is still lacking, thus explaining why strategies adopted so far to reverse HIV-1 latency in vivo are still incipient in terms of efficacy. So far, latency-reversing agents can induce the production of replication-competent virus from only 1 out of 1 million resting CD4þ lymphocytes. Some light on the nature of this non-induced provirus has been recently shed by Siliciano’s group at last Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI) [1]. Surprisingly, they show that around 12% of the non-induced provirus is replication-competent with intact proviral genome and long-terminal repeat (LTR) function. Notably, by investigating the sites of HIV-1 DNA

Members of the HIV prevention research community gathered in Cape Town, South Africa in October 2014 for the inaugural HIV Research for Prevention (HIV R4P) conference on AIDS vaccine, microbicide and antiretroviral-based prevention science. Although prophylactic approaches were the primary focus of the meeting, multiple abstracts describing work in human studies, acute HIV infection, and anima...
متن کاملHighlights from the 2016 International Symposium on HIV & Emerging Infectious Diseases (ISHEID)
For three days in May 2016, the International Symposium on HIV & Emerging Infectious Diseases gathered participants from all over the world around the theme 'Fighting deadly viruses'. HIV infection remained the main topic of the meeting but hepatitis, Ebola and Zika viruses as well as other emergent pathogens were also extensively covered. In this article we have tried to summarise what was pre...
متن کاملHighlights from the Keystone Symposium on HIV Persistence 2015
Despite long-term control of HIV replication with combination antiretroviral therapy, HIV persists as quiescent integrated DNA in memory CD4+ T cells, and possibly in other cellular reservoirs, including naïve cells and macrophages. Low-level replenishment of the reservoir via limited cycles of replication, may also contribute to persistence, at least in some patients. Curing HIV infection will...

BACKGROUND This study was carried out in Opi-Agu a tropical semi-urban autonomous community comprising of three villages in Enugu State, Nigeria, between the months of April and June 2010. It was designed to determine the prevalence of Onchocerca volvulus infection and assess the perception of the disease among the inhabitants of this community. METHODS A total number of 305 individuals compr...
