Boric acid preservation of urine samples.

چکیده
Comparison of the results of bacteriological culture and microscopic examination of urine samples transported over a distance by the dip-inoculum transport medium, ice-box, and boric acid preservation with "natural" urine specimens showed that the last, in a final concentration of 1.8%, gives satisfactory preservation.

Papers The eVect of specimen processing delay on borate urine preservation
Aim—To investigate the eVect on urine culture results and their clinical interpretation of delaying the processing of urine samples in which boric acid had been used as a preservative. Methods—792 mid-stream specimens of urine from patients attending their general practitioner were received in borate containing plastic jars. The specimens were cultured upon receipt, stored at room temperature, ...
متن کاملHome collection of urine specimens--boric acid bottles or Dipslides?
Sterile mid stream specimens of urine (MSSU) were obtained from 84 children in a hospital outpatient department. All 84 children collected urine at home by one of two Dipslide methods and by collection into boric acid within 24 hours of the hospital collected MSSU. The samples collected at home were posted to the hospital. Thirty six of the Dipslides (43%) and nine of the boric acid samples (10...
متن کاملEffectiveness of Preanalytic Practices on Contamination and Diagnostic Accuracy of Urine Cultures: a Laboratory Medicine Best Practices Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
BACKGROUND Urinary tract infection (UTI) in the United States is the most common bacterial infection, and urine cultures often make up the largest portion of workload for a hospital-based microbiology laboratory. Appropriately managing the factors affecting the preanalytic phase of urine culture contributes significantly to the generation of meaningful culture results that ultimately affect pat...
متن کاملBacteriostatic and bactericidal actions of boric acid against bacteria and fungi commonly found in urine.
Boric acid has been used for over 20 years to preserve urine while in transit for bacteriological examination. It has been suggested that it may be toxic for some urinary pathogens. To investigate this several strains of bacteria and fungi commonly found in urine were exposed to different concentrations of boric acid in nutrient broth. Viable counts were made at the outset and at intervals for ...
متن کاملBody Weight Reducing Effect of Oral Boric Acid Intake
BACKGROUND Boric acid is widely used in biology, but its body weight reducing effect is not researched. METHODS Twenty mice were divided into two equal groups. Control group mice drank standard tap water, but study group mice drank 0.28mg/250ml boric acid added tap water over five days. Total body weight changes, major organ histopathology, blood biochemistry, urine and feces analyses were co...
