Lectures on the Madsen–Weiss theorem

چکیده
This is a draft of the lecture notes for my four lectures at the Park City Math Institute, Utah 2011. The lectures form a continuation of Nathalie Wahl’s lectures, and I refer to her lectures for context and motivation. My goal for the lectures will be to give a precise statement of the MadsenWeiss theorem and give (most of) a proof. The theorem was first proved by Madsen and Weiss in [4]. The lectures will concern the proof given in [1] (parts of which were outlined in [2]), and the reader is referred there for more details. The exposition is influenced by Hatcher’s survey [3].

Madsen-Weiss for geometrically minded topologists
We give an alternative proof of Madsen-Weiss’ generalized Mumford conjecture. Our proof is based on ideas similar to Madsen-Weiss’ original proof, but it is more geometrical and less homotopy theoretical in nature. At the heart of the argument is a geometric version of Harer stability, which we formulate as a theorem about folded maps.
متن کاملAn Exposition of the Madsen-Weiss Theorem
The theorem of Madsen and Weiss [MW] identifies the homology of mapping class groups of surfaces, in a stable dimension range, with the homology of a certain infinite loopspace. This result is not only intrinsically interesting, showing that two objects that appear to be quite different turn out to be homologically equivalent, but it also allows explicit calculations of the stable homology, rat...

متن کاملN ov 2 00 6 Characteristic classes of spin surface bundles : Applications of the Madsen - Weiss theory
In this work, we study topological properties of surface bundles, with an emphasis on surface bundles with a spin structure. We develop a criterion to decide whether a given manifold bundle has a spin structure and specialize it to surface bundles. We study examples of surface bundles, in particular sphere and torus bundles and surface bundles induced by actions of finite groups on Riemann surf...
