چکیده

water quality (e.g. low dissolved oxygen; Brunson et al., 1994), interfering with feeding in bivalves (Aureococcus anophagefferens, Tracey, 1988), mechanical injury (Chaetoceros spp., Bruno et al. 1989) and marketability losses due to off-flavors (Tucker, 2000), or toxicity. Toxic algae result in major losses in aquaculture causing mortality in finfish and shellfish operations as a consequence of: 1) anoxic or hypoxic conditions resulting from algal biomass, 2) mechanical damage to fish gills, and 3) toxins. Toxic algae also pose a threat to aquaculture through human health problems associated with toxin accumulation in seafood. This fact sheet considers toxic algae causing fish and shellfish mortality in saltwater aquaculture systems that may be a concern in the northeastern United States. Freshwater algal concerns in ponds were recently described by Rodgers (2008).

The use of algae in the diet and improving the color of ornamental

Ornamental fish are the most popular pets in most parts of the world. The trade in ornamental marine fish began around 1930, and has expanded significantly in recent years, with the maintenance of home aquariums and public spaces. International ornamental fish trade is a multibillion-dollar global industry, much of which is in coral reefs caught in the Indo-Pacific and Caribbean and marketed in...

Effect of pH and salinity on growth and bloom of Dunaliella sp. algae

In this study, effects of pH and salinity on growth and bloom of Dunaliella sp. algae were investigated. The algae were reared in different pH (6.0, 6.8, 7.0, 7.3, 7.6, 8.0, 8.6, 9.0, 9.7 and 11.0) and salinities (20.0, 31.6, 50.1, 79.4, 117.1, 125.9 and 200.0 ppt) at Inland Aquaculture Research Institute Phycolab during 2011. After 96 h, the algae reared in 50ppt salinity and below that had ne...

Harmful algal blooms and eutrophication: Examining linkages from selected coastal regions of the United States.

Coastal waters of the United States (U.S.) are subject to many of the major harmful algal bloom (HAB) poisoning syndromes and impacts. These include paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP), neurotoxic shellfish poisoning (NSP), amnesic shellfish poisoning (ASP), ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) and various other HAB phenomena such as fish kills, loss of submerged vegetation, shellfish mortalities, an...

HABs in a changing world: a perspective on harmful algal blooms, their impacts, and research and management in a dynamic era of climactic and environmental change.

More than 25 years ago, the author was asked to provide a retrospective analysis of the global status of what were then called “red tides”, but are now known as “harmful algal blooms” or HABs. The occasion was an international conference in Takamatsu, Japan (Okaichi et al. 1989), convened at a time when algal blooms seemed to be affecting more and more countries and causing increased economic l...

Dynamics of phytoplankton communities in eutrophying tropical shrimp ponds affected by vibriosis.

Tropical shrimp aquaculture systems in New Caledonia regularly face major crises resulting from outbreaks of Vibrio infections. Ponds are highly dynamic and challenging environments and display a wide range of trophic conditions. In farms affected by vibriosis, phytoplankton biomass and composition are highly variable. These conditions may promote the development of harmful algae increasing shr...
