چکیده

We tested the hypothesis that generics (e.g., Dogs have four legs) are a cognitive default, thereby allowing faster and less effortful processing in comparison to quantified noun phrases (e.g., all dogs). Participants judged sentences containing either generics or universally-quantified noun phrases as true or false. Under time pressure, participants treated universallyquantified noun phrases as if they were generics (e.g., responding true to All dogs have four legs, despite the existence of three-legged dogs). Participants also took longer to respond to sentences with universal quantifiers vs. generics. Data thus support a generics-as-default account.

Quantified statements are recalled as generics: evidence from preschool children and adults.

Generics are sentences such as "ravens are black" and "tigers are striped", which express generalizations concerning kinds. Quantified statements such as "all tigers are striped" or "most ravens are black" also express generalizations, but unlike generics, they specify how many members of the kind have the property in question. Recently, some theorists have proposed that generics express cognit...

Memory for generic and quantified sentences in Spanish-speaking children and adults.

Generic language ( Owls eat at night) expresses knowledge about categories and may represent a cognitively default mode of generalization. English-speaking children and adults more accurately recall generic than quantified sentences ( All owls eat at night) and tend to recall quantified sentences as generic. However, generics in English are shorter than quantified sentences, and may be better r...

Default Reasoning and Generics

There are numerous logical formalisms capable of drawing conclusions using default rules. Such systems, however, do not normally determine where the default rules come from; i.e. what it is which makes Birds fly a good rule, but Birds drive trucks—a bad one. Generic sentences such as Birds fly are often used informally to describe default rules. I propose to take this characterization seriously...

Children's interpretations of general quantifiers, specific quantifiers, and generics.

Recently, several scholars have hypothesized that generics are a default mode of generalization, and thus that young children may at first treat quantifiers as if they were generic in meaning. To address this issue, the present experiment provides the first in-depth, controlled examination of the interpretation of generics compared to both general quantifiers ("all Xs", "some Xs") and specific ...

Towards a Neuro-Cognitive Model of Human Sentence Processing

A formal sentence processing system is proposed which simulates different eventrelated potential (ERP) elicitation between sentences with and without unambiguous case marking. The electroencephalographical data are based on German subordinate clauses and Japanese sentences. As a formal framework we adopt Dynamic Syntax (Kempson et al. 2001), which enables incremental update of information by un...
