P8.28 Possible Impacts of the Enhanced Fujita Scale on United States Tornado Data

چکیده
The National Weather Service (NWS), with occasional augmentation by private assessors and universities, often uses damage surveys to determine path characteristics of wind events in general and tornadoes in particular. The results flow into a wide variety of utilizations, primarily involving: • Climatological recordkeeping, including the county-segmented Storm Data listing and its whole-tornado “ONETOR” counterpart at the Storm Prediction Center (SPC), as described in Schaefer and Edwards (1999), • Applied research on severe storms, including case studies and forensic meteorology, • Preparedness and hazard-mitigation activities involving the NWS, risk-reduction companies in the private sector, and all manner of public-sector emergency management agencies, and, • Verification of NWS watches and warnings.

The Statistical Severe Convective Risk Assessment Model
This study introduces a system that objectively assesses severe thunderstormnowcast probabilities based on hourly mesoscale data across the contiguous United States during the period from 2006 to 2014. Previous studies have evaluated the diagnostic utility of parameters in characterizing severe thunderstorm environments. In contrast, the present study merges cloud-to-ground lightning flash data...
متن کاملDiagnosing the Conditional Probability of Tornado Damage Rating Using Environmental and Radar Attributes
Radar-identified convective modes, peak low-level rotational velocities, and near-storm environmental data were assigned to a sampleof tornadoes reported in the contiguousUnitedStates during 2009–13.The tornado segment data were filtered by the maximum enhanced Fujita (EF)-scale tornado event per hour using a 40-km horizontal grid. Convectivemodewas assigned to each tornado event by examining f...

In addition to its geographic prominence, the Middle East region possesses an important position in foreign policy of great powers especially the United States. Through the implementation of different policies, these powers seek to secure their interests and interpret historical events into their own interests. Muslim nations' uprising is one of the most important developments in the Middle Eas...
متن کاملAdjustments in Tornado Counts, F-Scale Intensity, and Path Width for Assessing Significant Tornado Destruction
The U.S. tornado record is subject to inhomogeneities that are due to inconsistent practices in counting tornadoes, assessing their damage, and measuring pathlength and path width. Efforts to improve the modern tornado record (1950–2012) have focused on the following: 1) the rationale for removing the years 1950–52, 2) identification of inconsistencies in F0, F1, and F2 counts based on implemen...
متن کاملConvective Modes for Significant Severe Thunderstorms in the Contiguous United States. Part III: Tropical Cyclone Tornadoes
A gridded, hourly, three-dimensional environmental mesoanalysis database at the Storm Prediction Center (SPC), based on objectively analyzed surface observations blended with the Rapid Update Cycle (RUC) model-analysis fields and described in Parts I and II of this series, is applied to a 2003–11 subset of the SPC tropical cyclone (TC) tornado records. Distributions of environmental convective ...
