چکیده

The results of a CO line survey in central cluster galaxies with cooling flows are presented. Cold molecular gas is detected with the IRAM 30m telescope, through CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) emission lines in 6-10 among 32 galaxies. The corresponding gas masses are between 3.10 and 4.10 M . These results are in agreement with recent CO detections by Edge (2001). A strong correlation between the CO emission and the Hα luminosity is also confirmed. Cold gas exists in the center of cooling flow clusters and these detections may be interpreted as an evidence of the long searched very cold residual of the hot cooling gas.

1 Abstract The existence of cooling flows in the center of galaxy clusters has always been a puzzle, and in particular the fate of the cooling gas, since the presence of cold gas has never been proven directly. X-ray data from the satellites Chandra and XMM-Newton have constrained the amount of cooling, and it was realized that feedback and heating from a central AGN and its jets could reduce t...

The detection of molecular gas in the central galaxies of cooling-flow clusters

We present the detections of CO line emission in the central galaxy of sixteen extreme cooling flow clusters using the IRAM 30m and the JCMT 15m. These detections of CO(1-0), CO(2-1), CO(3-2) and CO(4-3) are consistent with the presence of a substantial mass of warm molecular gas (10M⊙) within 50 kpc radius of the central galaxy. We present limits on thirteen other galaxies in similarly extreme...

In many clusters of galaxies there is evidence for cooling flows in the central regions. A possibility is that a fraction of the gas forms cold molecular clouds. We investigate the minimum temperature which can be reached by clouds in cooling flows by computing the cooling function due to H 2 , HD and CO molecules. As an example, we determine the minimum temperature achievable by clouds in the ...

Scaling Relation to Understand Non-Detection of Cold Gas at the Cluster Center

Recent XMM-Newton observations of clusters of galaxies have indicated the soft X-ray spectra to be inconsistent with the simple isobaric cooling flow model. There is almost no feature of the cold gas expected from the model. This shows that we have not yet understood the physics of the hot gas in clusters of galaxies well. A quantitative evaluation of the behavior of gas cooling is important no...

Cooling by Heat Conduction Inside Magnetic Flux Loops and the Moderate Cluster Cooling Flow Model

I study non-radiative cooling of X-ray emitting gas via heat conduction along magnetic field lines inside magnetic flux loops in cooling flow clusters of galaxies. I find that such heat conduction can reduce the fraction of energy radiated in the X-ray band by a factor of ∼ 1.5− 2. This non-radiative cooling joins two other proposed non-radiative cooling processes, which can be more efficient. ...
