چکیده

We introduce and test a crowdsourcing technique for creative problem solving. In total, 1853 workers from Amazon’s Mechanical Turk produced 468 ideas for solving the 2010 oil spill problem in the Gulf of Mexico. In our technique, one crowd generated initial ideas, another crowd evaluated the creativity of these ideas, and yet another crowd combined pairs of ideas produced by the previous crowd. The selection of the two ideas to be combined was random in one condition, and in the other condition, biased toward more creative ideas. A new crowd judged the best 5 solutions by crowds to be as creative as the best 5 solutions by experts. This crowd also rated the crowds’ solutions combined through the biased selection as more creative than the initial solutions. Through the collective process of generating, evaluating, and combining ideas, crowds can produce solutions that are as creative as experts’.

Structures for Creativity: The crowdsourcing of design

Crowdsourcing can be used for design. Our work explores the forms of coordination that facilitate creative activity. In particular we have explored the combining of ideas through the use of a sequential combination system, a kind of human based genetic algorithm. We think that even more complex structures of coordination are possible, in which participants specialize their design activity by or...

Evaluating Design Solutions Using Crowds

Crowds can be used to generate and evaluate design solutions. To increase a crowdsourcing system’s effectiveness, we propose and compare two evaluation methods, one using five-point Likert scale rating and the other prediction voting. Our results indicate that although the two evaluation methods correlate, they have different goals: whereas prediction voting focuses evaluators on identifying th...

Crowdsourcing and Individual Creativity over Time: the Detrimental Effects of past Success

Several organizations have developed online crowdsourcing platforms that tap into the “wisdom” (creative ideas for new products and services) of a large “crowd’ of non-experts (consumers). The crowdsourcing model seems very attractive because consumers are intrinsically motivated to freely contribute their creative ideas, but little is known about the effectiveness of these approaches. Two year...
