چکیده
Multiple organ failure (MOF) is a common cause of death in intensive care unit (ICU) patients [1]. But what are the mechanisms underlying the development of MOF? Why, when we can support many of the individual organs, e.g., the kidneys with extracorporeal renal support, the lungs with mechanical ventilation, etc., do we all too often end up withholding/withdrawing these life-supporting therapies whenwe feel that there is no chanceof recovery, ormoreprecisely that the “multiple organ failure” state has become irreversible. Early therapyofpatientswith sepsis is associatedwith improvedoutcomes [2,3] andworseningorgan functionearly in thecourseofdisease is associatedwithworse outcomes. Lopes Ferreira et al. [4] reported that worsening organ dysfunction, as assessed by an increasing sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) score in the first 48 hours was associated with a mortality rate of at least 50% regardless of the baseline SOFA sore. More recently, we reviewed the time course of organ failure in two placebo-controlled sepsis clinical trials with Eli-Lilly and Co [5]. We found that improved cardiovascular, renal, or respiratory organ function within the first 24 hours following development of sepsis-induced organ dysfunction was associated with increased survival. Improved understanding of the mechanisms underlying the development of organ dysfunction and MOF may enable us to develop therapies targeted at preventing or limiting the early events associated with later development of fatal organ dysfunction, and hence improve outcomes. In this chapter, we will briefly explore some of the possible mechanisms involved in the terminality and irreversibility of organ failure.

Compressed Domain Scene Change Detection Based on Transform Units Distribution in High Efficiency Video Coding Standard
Scene change detection plays an important role in a number of video applications, including video indexing, searching, browsing, semantic features extraction, and, in general, pre-processing and post-processing operations. Several scene change detection methods have been proposed in different coding standards. Most of them use fixed thresholds for the similarity metrics to determine if there wa...
متن کاملColor scene transform between images using Rosenfeld-Kak histogram matching method
In digital color imaging, it is of interest to transform the color scene of an image to the other. Some attempts have been done in this case using, for example, lαβ color space, principal component analysis and recently histogram rescaling method. In this research, a novel method is proposed based on the Resenfeld and Kak histogram matching algorithm. It is suggested that to transform the color...
متن کاملAn Improved Motion Vector Estimation Approach for Video Error Concealment Based on the Video Scene Analysis
In order to enhance the accuracy of the motion vector (MV) estimation and also reduce the error propagation issue during the estimation, in this paper, a new adaptive error concealment (EC) approach is proposed based on the information extracted from the video scene. In this regard, the motion information of the video scene around the degraded MB is first analyzed to estimate the motion type of...
متن کاملThe Modelling of Stereoscopic 3D Scene Acquisition
The main goal of this work is to find a suitable method for calculating the best setting of a stereo pair of cameras that are viewing the scene to enable spatial imaging. The method is based on a geometric model of a stereo pair cameras currently used for the acquisition of 3D scenes. Based on selectable camera parameters and object positions in the scene, the resultant model allows calculating...
متن کاملScene perception: detecting and judging objects undergoing relational violations.
Five classes of relations between an object and its setting can characterize the organization of objects into real-world scenes. The relations are (1) Interposition (objects interrupt their background), (2) Support (objects tend to rest on surfaces), (3) Probability (objects tend to be found in some scenes but not others), (4) Position (given an object is probable in a scene, it often is found ...
