First Documented Cases of Polygyny in the Grasshopper Sparrow
نویسندگان
چکیده
—We studied the breeding biology of Grasshopper Sparrows (Ammodramus savannarum) on restored grasslands in Maryland from 1999 to present. We report the first documented cases of social polygyny in this species. Polygyny increased reproductive success for males in two of four cases, but its rarity suggests it is only a facultative behavior for this usually socially monogamous species Received 31 January 2009. Accepted 3 June 2009. Social polygyny is a mating system in which males pair bond with, frequently control, or gain access to two or more females simultaneously (Gill 2007). Seventy-one species of passerine birds (26%) within the United States and Canada have been reported to exhibit some form of social polygyny (Ford 1996, Hanley et al. 2007), although within most of these species polygyny seems to be the exception rather than the norm. Long-Term Abundance of Breeding Songbirds During Restoration of Northern Mixed-Grass Prairie
There are no published, long-term accounts of responses of grassland passerine birds to the restoration of northern mixed-grass prairie through combined use of fire and grazing. During 1979-2001, we assessed abundance of passerine birds (9 grassland species and 1 shrub-associate species) on 2 brush-invaded, mixed-grass prairie tracts at Lostwood National Wildlife Refuge in northwestern North Da...
متن کاملCharacteristics of Florida Grasshopper Sparrow Habitat Across a Gradient of Population Abundance and Persistence at Avon Park Air Force Range
Population trends of Florida Grasshopper Sparrows ( Ammodramus savannarum floridanus ) at Avon Park Air Force Range (APAFR) have been monitored using standardized point counts since 1996. Data collected from 1996-2001 were used to examine the spatial distribution of Florida Grasshopper Sparrows during those years. That analysis identified areas consistently used by breeding sparrows and estimat...
متن کاملEffects of Fire and Grazing on Grasshopper Sparrow Nest Survival
Patch-burn grazing is a management framework designed to promote heterogeneity in grasslands, creating more diverse grassland structure to accommodate the habitat requirements of many grassland species, particularly grassland birds. Published studies on the effects of patch-burn grazing on passerines have been conducted on relatively large (430–980 ha pastures), contiguous grasslands, and only ...

Please cite this article in press as: Jill A. Soha (2009), doi:10.1016/j.anbehav.2009.02.021 T E D P R O Adult male grasshopper sparrows sing two structurally and functionally distinct songs: buzz song and warble song. To investigate how these songs develop, we tutored three groups of young males in the laboratory: one with recordings, one with live adult tutors and one with no song (isolate bi...
متن کاملMolecular analysis of stomach contents reveals important grass seeds in the winter diet of Baird's and Grasshopper sparrows, two declining grassland bird species
We analyzed the diet of Baird's Sparrow (Ammodramus bairdii) and Grasshopper Sparrow (A. savannarum) in three different sites and sampling periods across the Chihuahuan Desert in northern Mexico. DNA from seeds in regurgitated stomach contents was sequenced using NGS technology and identified with a barcoding approach using the P6 loop of the trnL intron as genetic marker. During each sampling ...
