چکیده
The Naval Ocean Systems Center (NOSC)is supporting DARPA's natural language research program in the area of test and evaluation. Preparations are being made for a task-oriented evaluation of text understanding systems, building off the natural language contractors' familiarity with texts taken from naval messages and NOSC's previous experience in carrying out system evaluations. The objective of the work is to devise an evaluation plan that will satisfy the needs for characterizing the current state of the art in theoryand implementation-independent ways and for setting baselines against which progress can be measured.

£-L is an experimental software engineering environment and a programming language. An E-L program can be translated into executable code for the MC68020 by means of a Coagulating Code Generator (CCG) [K84a, K8clb, :v10r91]. Code produced by E-L/CCG is superior to that produced by a good optimizing C compiler (gee) on a suite of 10 benchmark programs. We present the benchmark results and, based...

The Coagulating Code Generator (CCG) is designed to generate highly efficient code in terms of instruction selection, register usage, and procedure calls. These are not the only determinants of code efficiency, however. Optimizing compilers also try to improve code by a number of well-know transformations that we refer to as global optimizations; examples are global common subexpression elimina...

NOSC has identified the Battle Group Tactical Trainer (BGTT) as an appropriate candidate for the integration of speech recognition in the navy. Current plans are to record speech samples and create transcriptions from the BGTT exercises at NOSC and the Naval Post-Graduate School. We will then evaluate the recordings to determine appropriate tasks for speech recognition, and create a language mo...
