Multipath IP Transmission: Motivation, Design, and Performance

چکیده

Most end devices are now equipped with multiple network interfaces. Applications can exploit all available interfaces and benefit from multipath transmission. Recently Multipath TCP (MPTCP) was proposed to implement multipath transmission at the transport layer and has attracted lots of attentions from academia and industry. However, MPTCP only supports TCP based applications and traffic rate allocated to each path is totally determined by TCP congestion control. In this paper, we implement multipath transmission at the network layer and develop a Multipath IP (MPIP) design consisting of signaling, session and path management, multipath routing, and NAT traversal. MPIP supports flexible multipath routing strategies to satisfy diverse application needs. We implement MPIP in the latest Linux kernel. Through controlled lab experiments and Internet experiments, we demonstrate that MPIP can effectively obtain multipath gains at the network layer. MPIP not only can be used by the legacy TCP and UDP protocols, but also works seamlessly with MPTCP. For TCP-based applications, MPIP’s performance is comparable to MPTCP, and the best performance can be obtained when they work together.

Layered coding for satellite-plus-terrestrial multipath correlated fading channels

The growth of wireless communications systems and the emergence of IP-based multimedia multicasting applications have led to the intensive study of satellite communication systems to complement the wireless terrestrial communication infrastructure, due to their inherent broadcasting capabilities along with their large potential coverage. The challenging combination of a GEO satellite and a terr...

A survey on methods to provide multipath transmission in wired packet networks

IP networks were designed to provide general connectivity. At their advent, routing methods focused only on finding one optimal path between given endpoints. Although many solutions to sending traffic via multiple paths have appeared over time, the majority of current IP networks are still managed to support only single-path transmissions. This survey examines various approaches which can provi...

Performance of concurrent multipath transmissions - Measurements and model validation

Concurrent multipath transport layer mechanisms have gained recently increasing interest in research and standardization because of the potential for bandwidth aggregation, load balancing and increased reliability. Multihomed end devices may benefit from IP-based multipath protocols like Multipath TCP or Concurrent Multipath Transmission via SCTP. In the future, concurrent multipath transport m...

Temporary Redundant Transmission Mechanism for SCTP Multihomed Hosts

In SCTP's Concurrent Multipath Transfer, if data is sent to the destined IP(s) without knowledge of the paths condition, packets may be lost or delayed. This is because of the bursty nature of IP traffic and physical damage to the network. To offset these problems, network path status is examined using our new mechanism Multipath State Aware Concurrent Multipath Transfer using redundant transmi...
