A Machine Model for NP-Approximation Problems and the Revenge of the Boolean Hierarchy

چکیده
This column addresses the following questions about the complexity of approximating the CLIQUE problem. 1. Is nding the vertices of the largest clique more diicult than merely nding the vertices of a 2-approximate clique (that is, a clique with at least half the size of the largest clique)? 2. What computational resources can be used to nd the vertices of a 2-approximate clique? 3. Could fewer resources be used? The results of recent studies (on the complexity of NP-approximation problems yield the following answers: (1) Yes, unless the Polynomial Hierarchy collapses; (2) Nondeterministic polynomial time with log log n+O(1) queries to SAT; and (3) Not unless the Polynomial Hierarchy collapses. Surprisingly, the proof of these results depends on the fact that a collapse of the Boolean Hierarchy implies a collapse of the Polynomial Hierarchy.

Bounded Queries, Approximations, and the Boolean Hierarchy
This paper investigates nondeterministic bounded query classes in relation to the complexity of NP-hard approximation problems and the Boolean Hierarchy. Nondeterministic bounded query classes turn out be rather suitable for describing the complexity of NP-hard approximation problems. The results in this paper take advantage of this machine-based model to prove that in many cases, NP-approximat...

متن کاملA New ILP Model for Identical Parallel-Machine Scheduling with Family Setup Times Minimizing the Total Weighted Flow Time by a Genetic Algorithm
This paper presents a novel, integer-linear programming (ILP) model for an identical parallel-machine scheduling problem with family setup times that minimizes the total weighted flow time (TWFT). Some researchers have addressed parallel-machine scheduling problems in the literature over the last three decades. However, the existing studies have been limited to the research of independent jobs,...
متن کاملPropagation Models and Fitting Them for the Boolean Random Sets
In order to study the relationship between random Boolean sets and some explanatory variables, this paper introduces a Propagation model. This model can be applied when corresponding Poisson process of the Boolean model is related to explanatory variables and the random grains are not affected by these variables. An approximation for the likelihood is used to find pseudo-maximum likelihood esti...
متن کاملDesign of a Hybrid Genetic Algorithm for Parallel Machines Scheduling to Minimize Job Tardiness and Machine Deteriorating Costs with Deteriorating Jobs in a Batched Delivery System
This paper studies the parallel machine scheduling problem subject to machine and job deterioration in a batched delivery system. By the machine deterioration effect, we mean that each machine deteriorates over time, at a different rate. Moreover, job processing times are increasing functions of their starting times and follow a simple linear deterioration. The objective functions are minimizin...
