Neil Smith’s Scale

چکیده
In this essay, part of a special issue acknowledging the scholarship of Neil Smith, we trace his contributions to conceptualizing scale. From his important foundational text, Uneven Development, to his later works that fashioned a more malleable, constructivist, and socio-cultural approach, Neil Smith made lifelong contributions to our understanding of the processes of scale production—contributions that have forever altered howwe understand the relationships among space, capitalism, and politics.

Human geography without scale
subjective–objective or chaotic–orderly. 14 This ready-made character of scale is well suited for adherents of critical realism, since it too sports a hierarchically organized set of ontological building blocks (of structures, mechanisms and events; see Sayer 1992, 141, 237). Realism’s dualisms and scalar hierarchies often intertwine, again notwithstanding Sayer’s cautionary remarks (1991; also...
متن کاملContinuous Curvelet Transform: II. Discretization and Frames
We develop a unifying perspective on several decompositions exhibiting directional parabolic scaling. In each decomposition, the individual atoms are highly anisotropic at fine scales, with effective support obeying the parabolic scaling principle length ≈ width. Our comparisons allow to extend Theorems known for one decomposition to others. We start from a Continuous Curvelet Transform f → Γf ...
متن کاملA Practical and Secure Coercion-Resistant Scheme for Internet Voting
Juels, Catalano, and Jakobsson (JCJ) proposed at WPES 2005 the first voting scheme that considers real-world threats and that is more realistic for Internet elections. Their scheme, though, has a quadratic work factor and thereby is not efficient for large scale elections. Based on the work of JCJ, Smith proposed an efficient scheme that has a linear work factor. In this paper we first show tha...
متن کاملMaynard Smith on the levels of selection question
The levels of selection problem was central to Maynard Smith’s work throughout his career. This paper traces Maynard Smith’s views on the levels of selection, from his objections to group selection in the 1960s to his concern with the major evolutionary transitions in the 1990s. The relations between Maynard Smith’s position and those of Hamilton and G.C. Williams are explored, as is Maynard Sm...
