چکیده

This work studies the upward-propagating migrating and non-migrating tidal effects from the lower atmosphere on the longitudinal variation of electron density ( Ne) in both the E and F regions at mid-latitudes during the 2002 March equinox. A total of 12 runs are conducted using the Thermosphere Ionosphere Electrodynamic General Circulation model for theoretical investigation. The Ne at altitudes above 200 km is affected by upward-propagating tides, with maximum values attained around 300 km. Migrating tides result in reduced longitudinal differences in the Ne over North America and in the Southern Hemisphere, while non-migrating tides induce a wave-4 pattern in both hemispheres. The non-migrating effect is weaker than the migrating effect after penetrating into the F region. The neutral composition (i.e., ratio of atom oxygen to molecular nitrogen) is dominant in regulating the Ne in both the migrating (accounting for approximately 64%) and non-migrating (about 60%) tidal penetration processes. Evidence of Tropospheric Effects on the Ionosphere

A new paradigm in upper atmospheric and ionospheric physics has begun to emerge, starting with discoveries from observations taken with the Imager for MagnetopausetoAurora Global Exploration ( IMAGE) satellite in 2002. These discoveries [Immel et al., 2006] show that the entire ionosphere, sometimes referred to as “the inner edge of space,” regularly responds to the tropospheric weather systems...

MGS Radio Science electron density profiles: Interannual variability and implications for the Martian neutral atmosphere

[1] Martian electron density profiles provided by the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) Radio Science (RS) experiment over the 95–200 km altitude range indicate wthat the height of the electron peak and the longitudinal structure of the peak height are sensitive indicators of the physical state of the Mars lower and upper atmospheres. The present analysis is carried out on five sets of occultation pro...

Changes in the longitudinal structure of the low-latitude ionosphere during the July 2004 sequence of geomagnetic storms

[1] In this brief report, the interplay between meteorological and geomagnetic activity influences on the low-latitude ionosphere is studied. Specifically, the disruption of the dominant wave-4 longitudinal structure of the equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) by geomagnetic storms is investigated in connection with a sequence of three coronal mass ejections in July 2004. Observations of in situ...

The effects of topographically-controlled thermal tides in the martian upper atmosphere as seen by the MGS accelerometer

Mars Global Surveyor accelerometer observations of the martian upper atmosphere revealed large variations in density with longitude during northern hemisphere spring at altitudes of 130–160 km, all latitudes, and mid-afternoon local solar times (LSTs). This zonal structure is due to tides from the surface. The zonal structure is stable on timescales of weeks, decays with increasing altitude abo...

The Midlatitude Summer Night Anomaly as observed by CHAMP and GRACE: Interpreted as tidal features

This paper presents a description of the Midlatitude Summer Night Anomaly (MSNA) in terms of solar tidal signatures, based on in situ observations from CHAMP (CHAllenging Minisatellite Payload) and GRACE (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment) during the solar minimum years 2008 and 2009. Our analysis is focusing on 40◦ to 60◦ magnetic latitude ranges in both hemispheres, where the reversed d...
