The Evolution of Bird Plumage Colouration: a Role for Feather-degrading Barcteria?

چکیده
The evolution of integumentary colouration in animals, and particularly its relationships with parasite-mediated sexual selection, is a controversial issue that has attracted the interest of numerous researchers (e.g. Hill, 1991; Houde & Torio, 1992; Andersson, 1994; Lozano, 1994; Badyev & Hill, 2000). Most studies concern birds, which exhibit an enormous array of colours and patterns unparalleled among vertebrates, yet unexplained by any synthetic theory. Ch. Darwin and A. R. Wallace already contended about bird colours in the 19th century (Cronin, 1991). However, the renewed interest on the evolution of plumage colouration can be traced back to Hamilton & Zuk (1982), who hypothesised that, within bird species, those indiArdeola 51(2), 2004, 375-383

Environmental and Genetic Effects on Pigment-Based vs. Structural Component of Yellow Feather Colouration
BACKGROUND Carotenoid plumage is of widespread use in bird communication. Carotenoid-based feather colouration has recently been shown to be dependent on both pigment concentration and feather structure. If these two components are determined differently, one plumage patch may potentially convey different aspects of individual quality. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS We evaluated the effects o...
متن کاملOn showy dwarfs and sober giants: body size as a constraint for the evolution of bird plumage colouration
The evolution of bird plumage colouration may be explained by a wide range of selective pressures, including both defensive and advertising needs. However, the relationship between plumage colouration and body size has never been investigated in detail. Here we hypothesize that body size represents a constraint for the evolution of plumage colour heterogeneity because the relative number of bod...
متن کاملIndependent sources of condition dependency and multiple pathways determine a composite trait: lessons from carotenoid-based plumage colouration.
Many colour ornaments are composite traits consisting of at least four components, which themselves may be more complex, determined by independent evolutionary pathways, and potentially being under different environmental control. To date, little evidence exists that several different components of colour elaboration are condition dependent and no direct evidence exists that different ornamenta...
متن کاملFlock formation and the role of plumage colouration in Ardeidae
It has been hypothesized that white plumage facilitates flock formation in Ardeidae. We conducted four experiments using decoys to test factors involved in attracting wading birds to a specific pond. The first three experiments tested the effects of plumage colouration, flock size, and species-specific decoys on flock formation. The fourth experiment examined intraspecific differences in flock ...
متن کاملMethionine supplementation influences melanin-based plumage colouration in Eurasian kestrel, Falco tinnunculus, nestlings.
The extent to which the expression of melanin-based plumage colouration in birds is genetically or environmentally determined is controversial. Here, we performed a between-nest design supplementation with either the sulphur amino acid dl-methionine or with water to investigate the importance of the non-genetic component of melanin-based plumage colouration in the Eurasian kestrel, Falco tinnun...
