cultural transmission

چکیده
The economic literature analyses cultural transmission as the result of interactions between purposeful socialization decisions inside the family (‘direct vertical socialization’) and indirect socialization processes like social imitation and learning (‘oblique and horizontal socialization’). This article reviews the main contribution of these models from theoretical and empirical perspectives. It presents the implications regarding the long-run population dynamics of cultural traits, and discusses the links with other approaches to cultural evolution in the social sciences as well as in evolutionary biology. Applications to economic problems are also briefly surveyed.

Review. The multiple roles of cultural transmission experiments in understanding human cultural evolution.
In this paper, we explore how experimental studies of cultural transmission in adult humans can address general questions regarding the 'who, what, when and how' of human cultural transmission, and consequently inform a theory of human cultural evolution. Three methods are discussed. The transmission chain method, in which information is passed along linear chains of participants, has been used...

متن کاملLinking pattern and process in cultural evolution
This work aims to lay the theoretical and methodological foundations for investigating how individual level interactions aggregate to produce population level patterns of cultural diversity. Cultural traits can be transmitted between individuals in different ways. Here we investigate the dynamics produced by horizontal transmission (transmission within age groups), vertical transmission (from p...
متن کاملPromoting meme diversity and transmission fidelity in artificial proto-cultures
Cultural evolution occurs through the transmission of cultural traits, and we consider the meme as the unit of cultural transmission. We construct an agent-based model representing the processes by which cultural transmission occurs and to link these to the community-scale phenomena arising from agent interactions. We base our model on small communities of e-Puck robots, and following work on m...
متن کاملCultural evolution developing its own rules: The rise of conservatism and persuasion∗
In the human sciences, cultural evolution is often viewed as an autonomous process free of genetic influence. A question that follows is, If culture is not influenced by genes, can it take any path? Employing a simple mathematical model of cultural transmission in which individuals may copy each other’s traits, we show that cultural evolution favors individuals who are weakly influenced by othe...
