Perceived Quality in Surround Sound Systems
نویسنده
چکیده
he increased use of sound systems comprising more than two channels has given a vast number of possibilities for producers, editors and consumers to create and/or alter the sound image finally reproduced at the consumer's end of the chain. It is empirically and experimentally known that this sound image is able to give the listener an improved feeling of presence and more directional cues. It is agreed upon by researchers that one of the important properties of a multichannel sound system is the spatial impression created by the system, i e how the system deals with the threedimensional characteristics of the sound sources and their environment.

Systematic Evaluation of Perceived Spatial Quality
Evaluation of the audio quality a listener perceives is an important issue for all those involved in audio recording and reproduction. The variety of tools in audio work facilitates advanced processing of the audio signal. The aims of these processes differ, but they all in some way, sooner or later give rise to the question of in which way the audio quality is influenced by them. The use of mu...
متن کاملSpatial audio and sensory evaluation techniques – context, history and aims
Spatial sound reproduction gives rise to new challenges for those trying to evaluate sensory features contributing to perceived quality. Recent technical developments have enabled the delivery of sophisticated multichannel audio signals to consumers, over links that range very widely in quality, requiring decisions to be made about the tradeoffs between different aspects of audio quality. Spati...
متن کاملEvaluation of Perceived Spatial Audio Quality
The increased use of audio applications capable of conveying enhanced spatial quality puts focus on how such a quality should be evaluated. Different approaches to evaluation of perceived quality are briefly discussed and a new technique is introduced. In a series of experiment, attributes were elicited from subjects, tested and subsequently used for derivation of evaluation scales that were fe...
متن کاملMicrophone Techniques for Multichannel Surround Sound
A controlled subjective test was carded out to assess selected qualities of three microphone techniques for capturing the ambient sound of a concert hall surround sound. The effects of signal delay between the front and rear channels and microphone distance were explored. The tests indicate that the perceived results are programme-dependent, but that a compromise can be found using delayed clos...
متن کاملObjective Assessment of Spatial Localisation Attributes of Surround-Sound Reproduction Systems
A mathematical model for objective assessment of perceived spatial quality was developed for comparison across the listening area of various sound reproduction systems: mono, two-channel stereo (TCS), 3/2 stereo (i.e., 5.0 surround sound), Wave Field Synthesis (WFS) and Higher Order Ambisonics (HOA). Models for mono, TCS and 3/2 stereo are based on conventional microphone techniques and loudspe...
