Neurodegeneration and Ageing: A Fatal Encounter
نویسندگان
چکیده
Human polyglutamine (poly (Q)) induced neurodegenerative disorders are fatal illnesses characterized by progressive loss of neurons in specific areas of brain resulting to various neurological complications leading to death. The disease manifestation is age dependent and major symptoms include abnormal body movement, cognitive deficits, dementia, psychosis, tremors and spasticity. Ageing appears to have a direct impact on poly (Q) disease progression and severity of symptoms is greatly influenced by several intrinsic factors. This review attempts to provide an overview of human poly (Q) diseases and also discuss about the factors affecting progression of neurodegeneration. It also provides an outline of various therapeutic approaches which could be potentially useful to combat these tragic human diseases. *Corresponding author: Surajit Sarkar, Department of Genetics, University of Delhi South Campus, Benito Juarez Road, New Delhi-110 021, India, Fax: +91-1124112761; E-mail: [email protected] Received April 01, 2013; Accepted April 27, 2013; Published April 30, 2013 Citation: Chanu SI, Singh MD, Yadav R, Raj K, Sarkar S (2013) Neurodegeneration and Ageing: A Fatal Encounter. The paper aims to examine the population ageing as a new phenomenon effecting rural areas in Iran. Population ageing is going up throughout the country especially in the rural areas by 6.8 percent. fertility decline, increase in the youth migration to cities, and coming back to rural areas after retiring are the major factors which involve in rural ageing. This may jeopardize the communities. f...

The living of the elderly has been turned into a problematic issue affected by social, cultural and economic changes, however, this problematic is not registered in policy makings and there is not appropriate social polices associated to the elderly. The subject of the current study is observe social policies in the context of development plans after the Revolution, to discover overt and covert...
متن کاملCalcium-dependent and aspartyl proteases in neurodegeneration and ageing in C. elegans.
Proteolytic mechanisms have been implicated in the process of ageing, and in many neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and Huntington's diseases, which are most prevalent in old age. Simple model organisms such as the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans and the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, which offer the prowess of sophisticated genetic approaches, have contributed to...
متن کاملAgeing, neurodegeneration and Parkinson's disease.
Age is the largest risk factor for the development and progression of Parkinson's disease (PD). Ageing affects many cellular processes that predispose to neurodegeneration, and age-related changes in cellular function predispose to the pathogenesis of PD. The accumulation of age-related somatic damage combined with a failure of compensatory mechanisms may lead to an acceleration of PD with age....
متن کاملMay “Mitochondrial Eve” and Mitochondrial Haplogroups Play a Role in Neurodegeneration and Alzheimer's Disease?
Mitochondria, the powerhouse of the cell, play a critical role in several metabolic processes and apoptotic pathways. Multiple evidences suggest that mitochondria may be crucial in ageing-related neurodegenerative diseases. Moreover, mitochondrial haplogroups have been linked to multiple area of medicine, from normal ageing to diseases, including neurodegeneration. Polymorphisms within the mito...
