Locational Conflict Patterns and Urban Ecological Structure

چکیده
The existing and ever-changing geography of the city and its region is the end-product of innumerable conflicts over locational issues. The provision of public services, attempts to close schools, the enforcement and modification of zoning codes and the alteration of traffic patterns are familiar examples of the types of locational issues which confront most large and growing cities. Although planners and policy makers may seek to avert such conflicts, it is generally regarded (particularly in the North American case) that market forces play the dominant role in the eventual siting of private and public investments and in the spatial allocation of noxious and amenity features.’ As a consequence, it is not surprising that the spatial distributions of the costs and benefits associated with changes in the city’s physical structure accord well with the geographic patterns of its citizens’ status and political power. Indeed, the varying abilities of people and communities to command a voice in designing, maintaining (protecting) and enhancing their local areas have facilitated a spatial polarization which has prompted questioning of the marketplace ethic. (Bunge, 1975; Harvey, 1971). In this paper locational issues are viewed as resulting from divergent interpretations of ‘best

Structural Dimensions in the Geography of Locational Conflicts
LOCATIONAL CONFLICT is a frequent by-product of efforts to change the physical structure of man-made environments. Within the geography discipline, theoretical and empirical interests in the conflict basis of public and private decisions on the use of land were stimulated in the early 1970s by the work of Julian Wolpert and his associates.' The resolution of conflicts over the locations of spec...
متن کاملStochasticity in Natural Forage Production Affects Use of Urban Areas by Black Bears: Implications to Management of Human-Bear Conflicts
The rapid expansion of global urban development is increasing opportunities for wildlife to forage and become dependent on anthropogenic resources. Wildlife using urban areas are often perceived dichotomously as urban or not, with some individuals removed in the belief that dependency on anthropogenic resources is irreversible and can lead to increased human-wildlife conflict. For American blac...

Urbanization has been cited as an important factor in worldwide amphibian declines, and although recent work has illustrated the important influence of broad-scale ecological patterns and processes on amphibian populations, little is known about the factors structuring amphibian communities in urban landscapes. We therefore examined amphibian community responses to wetland habitat availability ...
متن کاملInvestigating the Evolution of Spatial Structure Patterns of Migration in West-Azerbaijan Province
Migration and quality of redistribution of population across country is one of the main factors that planners take into account to control population and guide its movements to economic poles. Scientific recognition of migration phenomenon is important for managing and policy making in the country. These movements change migration pattern, in a way that along with increase in population and the...
متن کاملUrban Ecology: Patterns of Population Growth and Ecological Effects
Currently, over 50% of the world’s population lives in urban areas. By 2050, this estimate is expected to be 70%. This urban growth, however, is not uniformly distributed around the world. The majority of it will occur in developing nations and create megacities whose populations exceed at least 10 million people. Not all urban areas, however, are growing. Some are actually losing populations b...
