Analyzing Before Solving: Which Parameters Influence Low-Level Surgical Activity Recognition

چکیده
Automatic low-level surgical activity recognition is today well-known technical bottleneck for smart and situationaware assistance for the operating room of the future. Our study sought to discover which sensors and signals could facilitate this recognition. Low-level surgical activity represents semantic information about a surgical procedure that is usually expressed by the following elements: an action verb, surgical instrument, and operated anatomical structure. We hypothesized that activity recognition does not require sensors for all three elements. We conducted a large-scale study using deep learning on semantic data from 154 operations from four different surgeries. The results demonstrated that the instrument and verb encode similar information, meaning only one needs to be tracked, preferably the instrument. The anatomical structure, however, provides some unique cues, and it is thus crucial to recognize it. For all the studied surgeries, a combination of two elements, always including the structure, proved sufficient to confidently recognize the activities. We also found that in the presence of noise, combining the information about the instrument, structure, and historical context produced better results than a simple composition of all three elements. Several relevant observations about surgical practices were also made in this paper. Such findings provide cues for designing a new generation of operating rooms.

Estimation of the Driving Style Based on the Users’ Activity and Environment Influence
New models and methods have been designed to predict the influence of the user's environment and activity information to the driving style in standard automotive environments. For these purposes, an experiment was conducted providing two types of analysis: (i) the evaluation of a self-assessment of the driving style; (ii) the prediction of aggressive driving style based on drivers' activity and...
متن کاملEvaluation of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP)-2 and MMP-9 activity in serum and biochemical and hematological parameters in spontaneous canine cutaneous tumors before and after surgical treatment
Recently, matrix metalloproteinases (MMP), in particular the gelatinases MMP-2 and MMP-9, generally considered as tumor markers for clinical applications. A longitudinal 2-years follow-up survey was performed on dogs with cutaneous tumor. Serum samples were obtained from 22 dogs with different cutaneous tumors and 22 health dogs at the time of surgery and one month, three months and one year af...
متن کاملMapping Activity Diagram to Petri Net: Application of Markov Theory for Analyzing Non-Functional Parameters
The quality of an architectural design of a software system has a great influence on achieving non-functional requirements of a system. A regular software development project is often influenced by non-functional factors such as the customers' expectations about the performance and reliability of the software as well as the reduction of underlying risks. The evaluation of non-functional paramet...
متن کاملDiscovery of high-level tasks in the operating room
Recognizing and understanding surgical high-level tasks from sensor readings is important for surgical workflow analysis. Surgical high-level task recognition is also a challenging task in ubiquitous computing because of the inherent uncertainty of sensor data and the complexity of the operating room environment. In this paper, we present a framework for recognizing high-level tasks from low-le...
متن کاملDo Epidemiological Parameters in Patients with Localized Prostate Cancer have an Influence on whether a Patient is Envisaged for Surgery or Brachytherapy?
Introduction: Only few studies comparing treatment outcome for patients with localized prostate cancer control their results for the possible confounding of demographic and clinical parameters. This fact prompted us to compare epidemiological data of patients before receiving brachytherapy (BT) to patients envisaged for radical prostatectomy (RP). Methodology: We looked at demographic and clini...
