چکیده

Understanding the structure of liquid/solid interfaces is important for applications such as catalysis and electrochemistry. Now, Voïtchovsky et al. report the probing of various liquid/solid interfaces, on an atomic and molecular scale, using small-amplitude modulation atomic force microscopy (AFM). The solid and the dynamically operated AFM cantilever are both immersed in the liquid during the imaging process. The method can be used to image a range of hard or soft materials, including mica, calcium carbonate (pictured), silicon carbide or a lipid bilayer, with water or dimethylsulphoxide as the solvent. The method produces high-resolution topographical images that resemble the known crystallographic forms of the analysed materials. In addition, Voïtchovsky et al. propose a model that explains the forces involved in image formation and then, by establishing a calibration curve using contactangle-derived data, can precisely map the interfacial energy with nanoscopic resolution. The researchers predict that the technique could be widely adopted because it requires no modification of a standard AFM instrument.

Size matters: why nanomaterials are different.

Gold is known as a shiny, yellow noble metal that does not tarnish, has a face centred cubic structure, is non-magnetic and melts at 1336 K. However, a small sample of the same gold is quite different, providing it is tiny enough: 10 nm particles absorb green light and thus appear red. The melting temperature decreases dramatically as the size goes down. Moreover, gold ceases to be noble, and 2...

Heat and Mass Transfer Analysis of MHD Nanofluid Flow with Radiative Heat Effects in the Presence of Spherical Au-Metallic Nanoparticles

Energy generation is currently a serious concern in the progress of human civilization. In this regard, solar energy is considered as a significant source of renewable energy. The purpose of the study is to establish a thermal energy model in the presence of spherical Au-metallic nanoparticles. It is numerical work which studies unsteady magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) nanofluid flow through porous d...

Influence of Size on the Melting Temperature of Metallic Nanoparticle

In This paper, the effect of size on melting temperature of metallic nanoparticles (Au, Pb and Bi) is theoretically simulated and explained. In this regard, the cause of difference in various experimental data is introduced, which is the difference between nanoparticles’ grain Gaussian distribution. This volume-depended model with the help of the Gaussian distribution can descri...

Mixed Convection Boundary Layer Flow on a Vertical Surface in a Porous Medium Saturated by a Nanofluid with Suction or Injection

An analysis of the steady mixed convection boundary layer flow past a vertical permeable surface embedded in a porous medium saturated by a nanofluid is performed in this study. Numerical solutions of the similarity equations are obtained using the shooting method. Three types of metallic or nonmetallic nanoparticles, namely Copper (Cu), Alumina (Al2O3) and Titania (TiO2) are considered by usin...

Effect of heat source/sink on MHD Mixed convection Boundary layer flow on a vertical surface in a porous medium saturated by a nanofluid with suction or injection

The effect of heat source/sink on steady two-dimensional laminar MHD mixed convection boundary layer flow past a vertical permeable surface embedded in a porous medium saturated by a nanofluid is performed in this study. Numerical solutions of the similarity equations are obtained using the shooting method. Three types of metallic or nonmetallic nanoparticles, namely Copper (Cu), Alumina (Al2O3...
