Migration Decisions , Remittances , and Altruism

چکیده
It is understandable that remittances are larger if the migrant is more altruistic. However, remittances that the household expects to receive, i.e. expected remittances, depend not only on remittances by the migrant, who has already moved to the host county, but also on how likely it is that a household member, a potential migrant, actually migrates. Such a probability can also be affected by altruism. However, previous studies focused mainly on the effects of altruism on remittances by the migrant. In this study, we investigate the effects of altruism on migration decisions by the potential migrant, as well as on remittances by the migrant, to make clear how altruism affects expected remittances. We show that altruism and the income difference between the host and home countries increase remittances by the migrant. However, if migration incurs costs, the potential migrant does not necessarily migrate, and for a given income difference, the potential migrant who is more altruistic is less likely to migrate. Therefore, expected remittances do not necessarily increase with the degree of altruism. In particular, expected remittances are likely to be smaller if the potential migrant is more altruistic when the host country’s income is sufficiently larger than the home country’s

Remittances and their Effect on Emigration Intentions in Egypt, Morocco and Turkey
What determines remittances – altruism or enlightened self-interest and do remittances trigger additional migration? These two questions are examined empirically in Egypt, Turkey and Morocco for households with family members living abroad. Results show, first, that one cannot clearly pinpoint altruistic or motives of self-interest since each country tells a different story and within a country...
متن کاملMigration, remittances, and inequality: estimating the net effects of migration on income distribution.
"This paper examines the net effects of migration and remittances on income distribution. Potential home earnings of migrants are imputed, as are the earnings of non-migrants in migrant households, in order to construct no-migration counterfactuals to compare with the observed income distribution including remittances. The earnings functions used to impute migrant home earnings are estimated fr...
متن کاملAn investigation of household remittance behaviour
Overseas remittances are a vital source of income for many households in developing economies, yet little is known about the characteristics of the sender households. We begin by examining what motivates households to send money to other households living abroad. We then model the remittance behaviour of a diverse set of ethnic minority groups living in England and Wales using survey data. Our ...

Remittances and Well-Being among Rural-to-Urban Migrants in China The main objective of this paper is to propose a systematic approach to empirically analyse the effect of remittances on the utility of migrants, as proxied by their subjective well-being (SWB). Using data from a new survey on China (RUMiC), we estimate models in which a measure of subjective wellbeing is regressed on the level o...
متن کاملDo Workers\' Remittances Matter for the Egyptian Economy?
Workers’ remittances constitute one of the most important sources of external finance for many developing countries. Empirical studies that implemented for various countries reveal workers’ ...
