Abstract Much sustainable HCI design research hopes to achieve net reductions in greenhouse gas emissions via persuasive or more efficient technologies. This research has shown promising results. However, the proxies generally used in evaluation (e.g. less energy or water consumption) may be poor indicators of such systems’ effect on emissions because of effects outside the scope of analysis; in particular, direct and indirect rebound effects as described in the economic literature. We suggest sustainable HCI might mitigate these problems by requiring designs to effect market options asymmetrically.

Recovery of oil products in Iran by substitution and production effects: A two-stage approach in the form of a general equivalence model

In the energy economics literature, one of the most important approaches to managing energy demand is to improve energy efficiency, which is associated with a concept called a rebound effect. The rebound effect causes the energy saving (due to improved efficiency) to be less than expected. Considering the importance of using oil products in the Iranian economy, the present paper tries to track ...

The Estimation of the Rebound Effects in Household Sector: The Case of Iran

I n recent years, the so-called Rebound effects that stem from energy efficiency gains have been of increasing interest in the economic literature. This effect happens when improvements in energy efficiency stimulate energy demand rather than decrease it. In the recent paper using Social Accounting Matrix data on the economy of Iran, the previous research has been extended on this field by...

Revisiting Rebound Effects from Material Resource Use. Indications for Germany Considering Social Heterogeneity

In contrast to the original investigation by William Stanley Jevons, compensations of energy savings due to improved energy efficiency are mostly analyzed by providing energy consumption or greenhouse gas emissions. In support of a sustainable resource management, this paper analyzes so-called rebound effects based on resource use. Material flows and associated expenditures by households allow ...

The effect of increasing electricity price on rebound effect in Iran by computable general equilibrium

The main goal of policies to increase the energy efficiency is reducing energy consumption, but this goal is limited by the rebound effect. In the literature of energy economics, there are two types of non-price and market tools to reduce rebound effects. Among the market tools, energy taxation is a favored approach. In the Iranian economy, where the prices of energy carriers, including electri...

Open Sustainability Innovation - A Pragmatic Standpoint of Sustainable HCI

The importance of sustainability in design became a major topic of interest in HCI research. Past research has shown how classical HCI design principles could be used to create values of the design through the open innovation concept. The scope of this paper follows from an earlier work of open innovation design principles that established the basis of open sustainability innovation since contr...
