چکیده

As is known, metalanguage is a language by means of which another language is described. The latter is called object-language. One and the same language may play the role of object-language and metalanguage. For example, the Russian language taken as an object of linguistic description is an object-language, the Russian language used for a linguistic description of Russian is a metalanguage. There are non-formal and formal metalanguages. For example, the Russian language used in ordinary grammars of Russian as a means of describing the Russian language is a non-formal metalanguage. Formal metalanguage is an artificial language, defined by deductive rules of construction, and used to describe natural languages. The problem of formal metalanguages for linguistic descriptions is a broad topic which we do not mean to-exhaust. We shall restrict ourselves to clarifying the role of formal metalanguages in constructing generative grammars. Every generative grammar is a formal theory. For example, a generative grammar of Russian is a formal theory of Russian, a generative grammar of English is a formal theory of English. We shall focus our attention on the question of correlation between formal metalanguages and formal linguistic theories understood as generative grammars. Let us take a concrete example: formal metalanguage and formal theory as two aspects of applicative generative grammar. This concrete example will make it possible, we hope, to draw certain general conclusions about the role of formal metalanguages in generative grammar. We shall start with formal metalanguage in applicative generative grammar. We call this metalanguage a universal operator language. The universal operator language is defined by the grammar which is an ordered quadruple

Defining Natural Language Grammars in GPSG

1 Overview Three central goals of work in the generalized phrase structure grammar (GPSG) linguistic framework, as stated in the leading book "Generalized Phrase Structure Grammar" Gaz-dar et al (1985) (hereafter GKPS), are: (1) to characterize all and only the natural language grammars, (2) to algorithmically determine membership and generative power consequences of GPSGs, and (3) to embody th...

Pāṇini grammar is the earliest known computing language

Pāṇini’s fourth (?) century BCE Sanskrit grammar uses rewrite rules guided by an explicit and formal metalanguage. The metalanguage makes extensive use of auxiliary markers, in the form of Sanskrit phonemes, to control grammatical derivations. The method of auxiliary markers was rediscovered by Emil Post in the 1920s and shown capable of representing universal computation. The same potential co...

Functionalism and the Metalanguage - Theory Confusion

It is often said that many functional linguists lack a ‘theory’. Within formal linguistics, it is common to talk of different ‘theories’, such as Government-Binding Theory or Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar. When formal linguists look at the work of functional linguists like Givón (1984, 1990, 1995), they do not see a ‘theory’ in the sense of formal theories like Government-Binding Theory,...

On the Architecture of Panini's Grammar

Pān. ini’s grammar is universally admired for its insightful analysis of Sanskrit. In addition, some of its features have a more specialized appeal. Sanskritists prize the completeness of its descriptive coverage of the spoken standard language (bhās. ā) of Pān. ini’s time, and the often unique information it provides on Vedic, regional and even sociolinguistic usage. Theoretical linguists of a...

Psycholinguistics, formal grammars, and cognitive science

In the 1980s, Charles Clifton referred to a “psycholinguistic renaissance” in cognitive science. During that time, there was almost unanimous agreement that any self-respecting psycholinguist would make sure to keep abreast of major developments in generative grammar, because a competence model was essential, and the linguistic theory was the proper description of that competence. But today, ma...
