چکیده

ABSTR•CT.--Histological criteria indicate that thyroid glands are organized into follicles at about the same time of incubation in Japanese Quail (precocial) and Ringed Turtle Dove (altricial) embryos, but dove thyroids develop more slowly, are much smaller and are much less active than quail thyroids by the time of hatching. These results indicate thyroid readiness for participation in early endothermic responses of precocial hatchlings, and relative thyroid inactivity in young ectothermic altricial nestlings.--Department of Biology, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, Virginia 24061. Accepted 12 April 1976.

Mode of development and interspecific avian brood parasitism

Avian interspecific brood parasites differ considerably in their commitment to parasitism; 87 species are obligate brood parasites, whereas 35 species are known to be facultative brood parasites. This variation is strongly related to mode of development. Obligate parasitism is found almost exclusively in altricial species, whereas facultative interspecific parasitism is predominant in precocial...

A precocial avian embryo from the Lower Cretaceous of China.

An embryo of an enantiornithine bird has been recovered from the Lower Cretaceous rocks of Liaoning, in northeast China. The bird has a nearly complete articulated skeleton with feather sheet impressions and is enclosed in egg-shaped confines. The tucking posture of the skeleton suggests that the embryo had attained the final stage of development. The presence of well-developed wing and tail fe...

Embryological Staging of the Zebra Finch, Taeniopygia guttata

Zebra Finches (Taeniopygia guttata) are the most commonly used laboratory songbird species, yet their embryological development has been poorly characterized. Most studies to date apply Hamburger and Hamilton stages derived from chicken development; however, significant differences in development between precocial and altricial species suggest that they may not be directly comparable. We provid...

Hatching the Cleidoic Egg: The Role of Thyroid Hormones

A major life stage transition in birds and other oviparous sauropsids is the hatching of the cleidoic egg. Not unlike amphibian metamorphosis, hatching in these species can be regarded as a transition from a relatively well-protected "aqueous" environment to a more hazardous and terrestrial life outside the egg, a transition in which thyroid hormones (THs) (often in concert with glucocorticoids...

Developmental patterns of heart rate in altricial avian embryos and hatchlings

The aims of this study were to determine the patterns of development of heart rate (fH) in altricial avian embryos and hatchlings, and then to examine how fH is regulated to meet metabolic requirements in altricial embryos. Embryonic mean heart rate (fH-) in 12 altricial species (Passeriformes and Psittaciformes) increased during pre-pipping incubation in all species except the cockatiel (Nymph...
